Just got a TD5 defender, couple of potentially daft question
Just bought a TD5 defender 90, pic below...

Want to swap the middle seat for a cubby box, is it a straight swap, unbolt seat and bolt in box? Is there anything under the middle seat?

Also potential really daft one, is there anything under the rear seats or just lots of arch room, been under it a few times but not clocked on... Embarassed

Some one wiser than me will come along in a minute but I THINK

Yes seat to cubby box is a straight swap. Not sure whats underneath it.

Yes again on the rear seats, lots of arch room for wheel travel etc.

When I removed the centre seat in mine to replace with a Paddock's sourced cubby box I found it didn't fit so well.

When the seat is removed you'll find a metal plate with a few screws, undo those and you get access to the top of the tranfser box. I thought the cubby box was supposed to slot into this rectangular hole but it didn't.

So I mounted mine on a plinth of plywood cut to size to squeeze in between the seats rails either side. I sprayed it black to blend in and it adds some weight so I don;t feel the need to bolt it in, which means I can remove it for when I need to do work etc. 2016 D4 HSE

Perfect thanks for the help!

Does that mean that you have to remove the plate to use it or is the ply screwed to it? Next job is sound insulation, so might be a good while your there moment...

Now time to go cubby box shopping.

The plate stays in place, the cubby bolts through it.

If you're not after an original cubby, Mobile Storage Systems do a very nice one.

On my Puma the cubby (originally centre tray) is secured to Rivnuts fitted to the metal plate.

There is no continuity with Land Rover, you may remove your centre seat and find four rivnuts already fitted underneath ready to accept a new cubby box alternatively there maybe just a blank plate.

We have found that the rivnuts aren't always in the same place from vehicle to vehicle and of course the previous owner may have made 'modifications'

We supply four rivnuts and a rivnut fitting tool with our cubby boxes to cover every eventuality

in the past i have fitted cubby boxes by removing middle seat, removing the black metal access plate. attaching two runners to the metal plate (usually bolted to it with sunken heads). you can then refit the black plate (with runners on) and then attach the cubby to the runners using what ever spacers/raisers you needs to suit arm position!

wrt the rear arches, drivers side rear will have the fuel filler in part of it, the rest of it is open space. if you were looking to utilise that space the space to the front of the axle can be used by check axle movements/wheel rub/contact and allow for possible rim/tyre option changes! Cheers

I've done all manner of things to mine, including sound insulation. Feel free to make a cuppa, put your feet up and take a long read!
