Gutter advice - LR not house !!
Hoping to cure the wet knee syndrome in the 90 as it has quite a few cracks in the gutter seal, some about 2" long but very thin. Rain gets into the inner gutter and I get soaked the first time I put the brakes on.

Do I just try and seal them or am I best to dig the old seal out and replace with Sikaflex - cue K9F Rolling with laughter

I have also got to do the join over the roof where the previous little old lady owner kept going under height barriers which were to low.

I think that getting rid of the old seal and putting a new seal in is probably going to be best, do it once do it properly, but any advice appreciated Thumbs Up

I have fitted new door seals and sorted the alpine windows out so the gutter and roof join are the last two areas to be done.

A few posts here ( www.defender2.net/forum/topic15827-15.html ) may be worth a read about the gutter sealing.... An engine to TDi for!

Bob

have a look at the seal above the windscreen. for an experiment, run a band of petroleum jelly or similar along the length of the joint above the windscreen, pop some newspaper in the channels next to the alpines to soak up any residual moisture.

leave in the rain (if we ever get any Rolling with laughter ) i found that seal the most difficult to fix.

the other unusual area is where the gutter arcs around the back door in the corners, make sure they are fully sealed. it took me about 6 months to fix my old td5 but it's worth it .. no more cold showers.

If I were to do it all again and I had the space, I'd take the roof off and re-fit - probably the quickest and most thorough way

cheers
steve

Thanks GUM Thumbs Up

Saw that one but to be honest I have never got on with Captain Tolley's hence the reason why I am looking at digging the old mastic out and replacing it.

I did force some Dum Dum into some of the cracks as per other posts, it helped but as there are so many of the little devils I thought a proper job would be easier ?

Hi,

A friend has used Captain Tolleys Creaping Crack Cure on an old caravan with great success http://www.captaintolley.com/

I reckon I would give it a go if I needed to stop a leak.

Thanks Steve (BPMAN version) Thumbs Up

I saw your post about the gutter over the rear door. Can't see any problem there but having said that I have only just found a three inch crack between the roof and gutter by the drivers door Shocked

Thanks the other Steve, maybe I should get some CT's and try again, at least it will be quicker than digging the old seal out. If it solves the problem then I could do a proper reseal when the better weather arrives, 202..... Laughing

I used Sikaflex on the seams and in the gutters before I painted the roof last year.

I had a lot of water pooring down from the inner gutters before, but now I only have a very small leak left somewhere, I suspect the rubber from the alpine windows or the windscreen upper seal. Cheers, Vincent

Did you remove the old mastic from the gutter before putting the Sikaflex in or did you put it over the old stuff ?

No, did not remove it, but gave gave it a good clean, degrease, sanding, cleaning and degrease again before putting the Sikafex in. Cheers, Vincent
