2008 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 SVX Station Wagon Santorini Black
Been to the Land Rover doctors today, there was signs of water on the block from behind the P gasket so it had a new water pump, P Gasket and Thermostat and a transfusion ... still has an airlock.

The plug at the top of the radiator is full, the plug next to the thermostat is full, garage recommended leaving the truck on the level with the expansion tank cap off overnight .. I'll have another look in the morning.

this morning, I took it out for a run up the hill, temperature went just over 1/2 way and stayed there, stopped at the top of the hill and had a look under the bonnet. the bottom hose is hot, the top hose is cool, the expansion tank is warm.

tried the heater, works a treat, left it on and the temp dropped to 1/2 way (normal)

my theory now is I have a blocked radiator or blocked bottom hose - thoughts anyone ?

Steve

As you've replaced a few things already might pay to replace expansion tank cap, even a slight leak will affect the cooling system. Wouldn't have thought your rad is blocked internally. 2007 TD5 90 Hard Top

thanks Nige, but it's not using water, just not cooling it enough.

any idea what the small black connector does that joins the small radiator hose, the small thermostat hose to the expansion tank ? is it a one-way valve or just a connector ?

there not a webasto on the 300.

just read up about another 300 tdi with the same symptoms and it looks like the block may need flushing. the owner used central heating flushing liquid - I might give that a try

ran central heating cleaner thru the engine for 2 hours and use high pressure water to flush it all out, some stuff with the consistency of egg-white / snot came out.

refilled with water and a/f mix ... better.

then took out for a test drive, put lights on and gauge went up Shocked - cleaned earths on dash, better still. so all appears to be good now.

On advice from another forum, I am also going to put a new earth on the dash to the bulkhead.

.. thanks for all your help
