Gps Tracking Devices
Ok our landrovers are not the most secure vehicles on the road and the theft of defenders seems to be on the increase . I for one put my steering wheel and battery in my pocket every time i leave it but i want to fit a gps tracker that i can see on my laptop or phone , preferably hard wired and hidden . So who has one ? The ones iv seen are all cheep battery powered or company controled who want a fleet order. Its not gona get far is it if the cops are able to zoom in on it ? Why doesnt every defender driver have one after all theres thousands spent on extras that the insurance is never gona cough up for . ( yes i do look a tit walking doon the high st with a steering wheel under my arm )

Any form of tracking has to be better than nothing at all, so don't discount the cheapo end completely.

This may be a little out of date now but check out this link for a cost/features comparison of some of the more popular (and pricier) units out there.

On top of these, I'm tempted to buy something like this to act as a back up. I wouldn't bother hard wiring this, just stuff it somewhere amongst all the cr*p in the truck on the odd occasion when it's parked up in a less secure environment than normal. Jon - 110 td5 [sold]. Currently Defenderless.

We have a Thatcham CAT 6 unit (Basically means insurance approved) which we can do for £625 + VAT with a lifetime subscription. This becomes cost effective when keeping your vehicle.

So this is not a journey based tracking system such as Carrotech or Sky Tag but a security based tracker where you would report the theft of your vehicle and the tracking company will liaise directly with the police. You can also see the last reported location of your vehicle anytime on line and “ping” it for a current location five times a month included.

We use the road angel vehicle tracking system. You can log in 24/7 to see motors live/ real time plus brings up / view there history . Personally I prefer this type, as the history can improve finding the motor if parked up in an areas with no signal or it is being masked .

I find the some cheaper tracking systems for stolen motors flawed a little as they don't send history constant. So if a scenario happens that motor get taken , parked up and masked so no signal can be recived or sent (steel container) then you or the tracking company ping the motors after the event when you discover it has been taken , You may not find it ? Obviously some systems are link to the alarm and detect unauthorized vehicle moment these are much better.

Ones with constant / regular history upload I feel are the better option. Only draw back battery drain if left for long periods and data cost if on pay as you go type chip 2023 110 Xs commercial D250

The eBay one, does it require a SIM card ? Are there ongoing costs ?

Thanks for all the help so far . Some devices and companys worth checking out . I wondered how long it would take for those to ask about my big pockets or small battery . Well its the battery cut off key , located outside under the passengers floor . . I still dont understand why trackers not common place on defenders .

@GoBeyond... Hi Matt, yes, looks like you'd need a Sim for it... my thoughts were just a pay as you go jobbie.

I'm not aware of any ongoing costs but for only £35'ish initial outlay and a couple of quid on a PAYG sim, it's worth a punt. Jon - 110 td5 [sold]. Currently Defenderless.

How about getting a cheap iPhone with a cheap sim, hook up an in-car charger and conceal it behind the dash or interior panel somewhere. The good thing is if you have a second iDevice you can then use the Find iPhone app to locate the phone and Defender. The location is displayed on a map instead of just co-ordinates and you can track it yourself. Cool

I have one of these SIMsin my ML first aid kit (with £25 prepaid credit for emergencies)...
http://www1.orange.co.uk/service_plans/pay...costs.html

Only reason I went with Orange was so it's different to my normal day to say phone so higher chance of getting a signal, but it should work well for what you want Thumbs Up (and you can put credit on it in many shops if recovery of your truck uses all your credit (however unlikely...) Shocked

No doubt an Iphone solution would work as suggested but based on my experience of Iphones, they're just as likely to freeze/hang and I'm not sure if that then would scupper the find my Iphone app, so I don't think I'd want to rely on it as my front line tracking solution... maybe as a back up though....but as always, something is better than nothing Thumbs Up

@Matt (GB), I've done a bit more digging on Ebay and wonder if this one may be a little better than the other link I posted.

More established UK seller, a later model tracker with additional storage capacity and the ability to hardwire with one of their kits. Okay its a fiver more and you still need to sort a SIM out. I've read something about these devices not liking 3G networks but I'm tempted to take the plunge, stick a SIM in it and then pop in the missus' Disco for a day or two and see if she really is as busy racing around the place as she claims Whistle

Let you know how I get on......... both with the tracker and the possible divorce if I get rumbled Shocked Jon - 110 td5 [sold]. Currently Defenderless.
