2007 Defender Blower Switch
Hi All,

I am a newbie to this forum and was hoping someone may be able to help me with a problem on my defender. The internal heater / blower has slowly stopped working on the various speeds and now fails to work at all! I have just taken out the slide switch and checking it with a multimeter it is dead - I can get the blower to work on all speeds by shorting the contacts with a bit of wire in the terminal block. I am going to try and source a new blower switch and hope this sorts the problem but was wondering whether anyone has had this happen (my thinking is that there must be something to make the switch fail - it is a bit melted along the copper switch, obviously this is what is stopping the contacts from making).

The other thing is does anyone know where I can get a new switch? I have spoke with my local land rover dealer and that did not get very far! I am hoping to just but the switch rather than a whole panel of some sort. The switch is by Magneti Marelli and has the numbers / details 1.580.415.0.0 - 719.00 - 12v - B837 on it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Ed.

Knowing LR, that switch is probably used on mid 90's Rover cars, so a hunt around a scrappy will probably turn one up cheap.

Contact Shukers parts they have a part request on their site. You will normally get a reply from a chap called Neil I needed a heater re-circ cable and he sorted that for me. The prices are better than expected too!!
Good luck Thumbs Up

Looking at my microcat the heater switch is part #JFC500840 and 88.10 (last months price)

edit: that might just be the "control" panel that adjusts windscreen to feet and temparature, not the actual fan switch.... will keep looking!

All done Very Happy ..

Contacted shukers and they (Neil) were spot on - had to but the whole heater panel but Neil gave me a good deal and had it delivered the next day.

Steve - Thanks for the tip.

Thanks all for your advice.

any clever sparks out there that could make a switch that was like on a slider so you could have half speed or any speed as mines a little noisy on 1?

Rotary or linear potentiometer switch is what you need rather than a switch that has fixed resistor values at each position.

My switch had just jammed in position 3, so I looked up the price of this now. It's gone up by approx 500% since the quoted post, 18 months ago, and now costs a staggering 433 ! Shocked Big Cry

I don't suppose anyone has a broken take-out I can have to break for parts? I only need the fan switch.

I removed mine when it was stuck on position 1 and with a stanley cut the plastic that was melted away. A wee bit of emery paper and some contact grease and its been fine ever since. Beats me how they melt though. William

Sorted! The top centre bulb had melted the edge of the slider and caused it to deform and catch one of the guides. Stanley knife to the rescue, now works better than ever before.

That top bulb actually touches the slider, and it looks as though mine was starting to fail and had got brighter, therefore hotter. I have decided to omit the bulb in that position (which isn't really needed) to prevent a recurrence.

Only a Defender could include design of such brilliance that a faulty 16p bulb can knacker a part which costs 431!

Those bulbs are a pain! I've often wondered if there are some (non directional!) modern LED alternatives that display just as good.
I'd give it a go anyway if the dash wasn't such a pain o mess around with. _\Hennessey|Venom| F5/___
