2011 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 USW Keswick Green

Unusual tyre wear

Regarding the MTRs on my 110, I have noticed that the inner edge of the drivers side front tyre is much more worn than the rest of the tyre. Stratstone Aylesbury checked everything out a month or two ago and said everything was aligned correctly, so what would be causing this problem?

The truck has done 33600 miles now. The other three tyres show normal even wear.
It may be unrelated but I have the impression the vehicle sits down a bit on this corner, and the drivers front wheel looks to be at a different angle to the body (which doesn't mean the body is straight of course...)

It looks as though some tread blocks are more worn than others. That seems weird since the tyre would wear evenly. Is that the photo distorting things or have you got one dodgy tyre?

Indeed some are more worn than others. The ones closest to the engine are much more worn than those closest to the body side. The middle ones are the same as the outer ones. As the wear is uneven I can only assume the wheel is somehow misaligned?

How do I do that? I know ATS wouldn't touch the wheel alignment.

Go and have a word with a decent tyre fitters shop, one's that deal with truck or van tyres are usually a bit more ameanable. For the balance, it's when the wheel is off and spun on a machine to check for misbalance, wobble, and they can make it run true by putting the weights on. Might be worth sticking your spare on so that it's easier to drop it on them without the hassle of them taking it off and putting it back on. An offer of a fiver in the folding form for the tea fund works wonders.

I was thinking of putting my unused spare on to see if that wears oddly as well, at least way I know its something up with the axle.

Okay I took it to the tyre fitters place locally, its not wheel balance, they said that would cause wear across the whole width of the tyre. They were of the opinion that its basically just due to how the steering and axle geometry is set up on a Defender. We noticed the passenger side tyre is similar, although not quite as worn. In fairness the difference inner to middle and outer of the tyre is only fractions of a millimetre but its enough to be seen. Has anyone else run MTRs for this kind of milage, mainly on tarmac? We decided to leave the tyres where they are as to swap them would lead to four unevenly worn tyres rather then just two. When the time comes the back ones can go to the front and it will get a new back pair.

TBH as far as I can recall all the Defenders I've had [including the last two Pumas] have suffered some degree of uneven wear to one or both front tyres and that is despite the usual checks on some of them. Steve.
Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades.
Current Defender: A non tarts hand-bagged Puma 110 XS USW.

In a way thats...encouraging? Not sure if thats the correct word, but at least its lessens the likelihood of something being amiss elsewhere in the drivetrain.

All the Defenders I have owned have always worn the outside edge of the nearside tyres which I am told is due to the amount of roundabouts locally. My latest 90 I haven't had from new and shod with Cooper ST's which are scalloped on the inner edges. Had everything checked and put it down to the tyres. What did your previous set of tyres wear like?

These are the tyres that have been on the vehicle since new.
