I am no expert on this either but from my experience mine sounded similar to yours on cheaper diesel. it sounded better on cheap diesel with 2 stroke added but seems to drive much better and quieter using the better diesels [such as BP Ultimate] and using 2 Stroke.
mine sounds really bad using Sainbury's or Shell so i have'nt used either now for a long time. have you tried switching diesel makes? BM52 |

checkout the thread entitled 'another rattly puma post' on page 7 of the TDCI section. Your situation sounds identical to mine. It seems that in most cases its a combination of fuel quality and/or slightly out of adjustment injector timing that can cause this. My' rattlyness' comes and goes and doesn't really bother me as performance and fuel consumption are fine

yes but with 40lbs ft more torque than the 'british leyland' engines it will tow the (stolen) tarmac roller much better

Thanks Zagato, I might take you up on your kind offer sometime. As for tuning / remapping then no. It's running version 'D' ecu software which I'm assuming it got as part of Q068B in October 2010. |

Hi BM52, I'm not sure this noise is a combustion noise (diesel knock) as I can hear a little of that in the background. This almost sounds like there's no oil in the engine as you accelerate moderately past 2000rpm when fully warmed up. When it's cold its sound is much quieter and smoother if that makes sense? I can live with it as long as it's not doing any damage. I do get occasional clutch chatter in neutral with the clutch up at the traffic lights - wondering if that's causing this resonance? I do wonder if reading these forums then spending time listening to the engine is a healthy occupation. Mines only used bp ultimate, not changed the oil (4000 miles ) , no 2so , performance is great but can sound almost refined one day and a bag of spanners the next.
But then again there is no soundproofing , you can see the engine thru the gap between bonnet and wing and it's not the most sophisticated of lumps is it. Love it to bits but I've concluded that I'll only really know if something's not right with it (the engine that is) when it stops making a dieselly racket. Before then there's the radio to turn up. Have to agree with you Stu - definitely not a healthy occupation. But if it didn't sound so rubbish I wouldn't be concerned. As for turning up the radio - I'm all for that but I'm still trying to acquire one of those

I have the exact same issues diesel knock low revs smooth when revved hard,i have added some 2 stroke a few days ago done 100 mile since and not noticed a differance.one thing i have noticed it sounds better when the window is down ie outside.Also i agree with you regards the engine sounding better when cold which is very strange.My 110 is only 2 month old and has cover 1600 miles.

Mine sounds like a bag of loose spanners at idle even though serviced to LR spec re fluids and timing etc spot on. Not a patch on td5 re that burble sound but imho it's a grand engine, and is very thrifty on fuel under norm loads. Current...07 90 Puma commercial

well its re-assuring to know other suffer with the bag of spanners one minute and sweet as a nut the next.......
I'm convinced the 2so helps but I'm yet to find a cure and I can't help but think there is one. if its sweet one minute why can't it be like it all the time???? personally I'm sure the engine pulls MUCH stronger at low revs when its running sweet than not. fuel consumption never really seems to change, no smoke just lots of sometimes and not at other times?? what the hell is it.... ![]() could it be the fuel rail - I just don't know. I am however sure its not the egr (now I've said that I'll be proven wrong I'm sure). there seems to be a connection with the induction side as this sounds great when running smooth but I'm really not sure ![]() ![]() ![]() |
