engine management light from unplugged MAF - std behaviour?
evening all! This is more of a general query as the behaviour from this engine (2.2 Tdci) is very different from the Disco TD5 that I'm used to Shocked

So, I fitted a new air filter (K&N) today as part of my long list of "things to tidy up" on this car having owned it for 4 weeks now and I forgot to re-plug in the MAF before starting (but not driving) the engine. The engine management light came on and has stayed on through a number of on/off cycles and a 15 min drive.

Only really posting this as the light is still on (I'll plug the Nanocom in tomorrow when its light again) and it surprised me slightly as the TD5 probably wouldn't have flagged this at all - in some cases driving with the MAF unplugged is a fault finding exercise!

So I'm hoping its just a far more sensitive engine/ECU set up rather than a pointer to a more serious issue - I'll find out tomorrow when I look at the nanocom no doubt!

In other peoples expereices is this "the way it is"? and would the engine management light go off on its own after more driving or is it a plug in a clear thing?

thanks all for any words of wisdom - or general thoughts Razz

Si

Yes the Puma is supposed to report this sort of thing with a MIL, any emissions-affecting fault must illuminate a MIL (Euro 4 and later requirement IIRC).  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

thanks Martin - that makes sense. And I thought the TD5 was picky at times!

Will plug in the nanocom tomorrow and clear that - and see what else is there, I've been putting that off so far Confused

You will likely have some DTC’s that need clearing with your Nanocom.

PS. Does Your K&N filter need oiling ? If so the oil can mist, contaminate the MAF and cause issues.

Hi Ian - yes I'm sure there are going to be some codes logged that will need clearing, I've been putting it off since buying it!

Unless there is anything really sinister then I'll just clear them all and see what re-occurs over the next few months

Re the K&N - yes it does need oiling post cleaning. Its new out of the box today so should be ok and I'll be sure to let it air dry for a bit post cleaning/oiling when its due a service.

Just remember to record the DTCs before clearing them and get some dedicated MAF cleaning spray to address any issues down the line.

Ps Bell Auto service did a lot of testing and found that a genuine LR paper air filter performs the best.
