Defender 110 XS side step refurb and parts
I bought my XS with the original side steps. Don’t want to drop the £300/400 on replacements but instead I want to try and refurb them.
A bit of welding and re powder coating I am willing to do to get them back to looking smart.
The rubber which is on top and surrounds the chequer plate is very rotten and degraded. Anyone know where I can get some replacement parts?
Also wanting any pointers or tips from people who have done the same before I start
Thanks

Instead of using rivets to refix tread plate and it’s rubber housing you can fit rivenuts / nutserts into the step and use socket head cap screws. I.e https://www.automotioncomponents.co.uk/am/...c+s+a+view

Once powder coating is removed get the step galvanised and paint, that way it won’t rust again and if chipped you can easy repaint.

Powder coating will always fail, especially in that location.

As a belts and braces spray bilt hamber dynax s50 into the step tube.

I’ve got some ally tops spare and may have the rubbers too I’ll have a look tomorrow. As above I’ve got a galvanised then powder coated set that have now done six years with no signs of tin worm. Just done set today for the Mrs 90. Nut sets and stainless flange cap head bolts to finish

Personally I wouldn't bother doing anything with your existing side steps. They rot from the inside out and once the rot is set in you'll end up spending more than a new set would cost to refurb them and they'll never look brand new again.

I've just replaced mine for the second time on a 2012 defender. I bought a really nice set from Manor Automotive, Took off the end caps and coated the inside with Dinitrol 1000 cavity protection. Hopefully that will stop the rot getting a hold.

Maybe look at getting some stainless steel ones for longevity.

In the last 10 years Ive always bought the "cheaper" ones ( as above)..after many years of trying to make "Genuine" last.

Imagine most of the resellers source from China Big Cry
UK made??..wouldnt know how to be sure of this?

I just think at £130 they are like tyres...just replace when needed Thumbs Up

I added a strip of rubber matting to the bottom of my Gwyn Lewis Mud Shields to protect the ends of my sidesteps from the worst of spray and mud from the rear tyre.
