Expedition Rack Refurb
I'm considering buying a second hand expedition rack for my 110. Has anyone disassembled one to refurbish one? If I do find one, I'm considering stripping it down at the time of collection and putting it in the car in bits, rather than installing it on the roof, only to remove it again to refurb. What tools would i require for the tear down? I would expect to go with a number of hex bits, torx and security torx and an impact driver, anything else needed?

Answering my own question, the rack can be broken down into component parts with a Torx T30 security bit and an 8mm.

Strip down started, clean up and paint to come.

Well, many things at the moment! On close inspection, there is quite a lot of oxidation bubbling under the coating on the cast parts, I’m looking at quotes for strip and re coat.

That’s a tricky one. If it has been anodised from factory you need to to give it a bath of sodium hydroxide. Once you se the colour coming off brush it off. Rinse with cold water and neutralise with vinegar or mild acid.
Get it anodised again.
For the metal parts, sure you can fix it yourself with a bit of patience…

I’m not sure it has been anodised. The finish is textured, I assume powder coated, as it does flake off around the oxidisation. The long parts appear to be extruded aluminium and the corners and mounting brackets look to be cast aluminium if it makes any difference.
