I've always carried bikes on a rear tow bar carrier...the best one we had was a MaxxRaxx. I'm pretty sure they don't make them any more but they often come up for sale on ebay.

All the time, road/gravel/mtb - the secret is I have a half width cubby box (was there when I bought it!) so front wheel can go further forward, bungy around top tube to passenger head rest posts 👍 2.4TDCI 90 - everyday brilliance
