just googled
so these go behind the stub axle Land Rover Stub Axle (inner hub) Seal, Pack of 2 Corteco OEM FTC4785 really my question is on the actual axle housing is there a seal there as well to stop the diff oil running out? or am i getting confused i have stripped these many time in the past but can not remember......................cheers Ivan 2016 Discovery 4 1989 90 CSW V8 (fully rebuilt and running like a dream) 1996 defender tray back fully rebuilt/loaded for challenge events |

there can be a seal there, i tend to leave them out and let axle oil lubricate the bearings.
not all vintages had them there anyway. not all shafts have a flat for them to run on either. Cheers James 110 2010 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |

I have read this somewhere as well
based on your knowledge to stop the oil leak on the rear inner wheel, there is three seals on the rear that can be changed would you have the part numbers at hand? i have the drawings but not sure of the part numbers...................................cheers Ivan 2016 Discovery 4 1989 90 CSW V8 (fully rebuilt and running like a dream) 1996 defender tray back fully rebuilt/loaded for challenge events |

Based on what I can google and the drawings I can check, these are the seals I require or not?
FTC5268G APPEARS TO BE THE SMALL AXLE SEAL ON THE INNER LIP OF THE AXLE BUT CAN BE LEFT OUT. FTC4785 GOES ON THE REAR HUB AND SITS ON THE STUB AXLE. FRC8222 GOES ON THE OUTER HUB Maybe not the best way to describe where they go but you get the drift ![]() cheers Ivan ![]() ![]() 1989 90 CSW V8 (fully rebuilt and running like a dream) 1996 defender tray back fully rebuilt/loaded for challenge events |

Have a look here:
https://parts.jaguarlandroverclassic.com/p...and-rover/ If it's like on later models you will have a paper gasket between the axle casing and the stub axle. There will be a seal in the stub axle (should be the one jst mentions) that will hold the axle oil in the axle. There is one seal in the hub which I don't think you need to touch unless you are doing the bearings. And finally you will need a paper gasket between hub and drive member. You should be able to find the p/n on the link above. |

Great!

Out of curiosity, how does the axle oil come to the bearings? Does it come through the stub axle and then back along the splines into the hub? Only relying on the end cap not to leak externally? |

Relying on memory here.... Original 200 tdi defender rear axle (drum brakes) had a strange seal arrangement that sealed the grease in the hub bearings at the front and the rear. All other Landrover wheel bearings I have encountered used a stub axle seal of some description to keep oil out of the hub bearings, or didn't bother. In most cases, the oil will migrate along the stub axle and feed into the bearings then be contained by the hub oil seal FTC4785 or equivalent. |

@Big ives
As far as I know, a Landrover 90 of that age would have originally been drum braked rear axle. This means there has likely been an axle swap at some point to achieve disc brakes all round. Do you know what axle has been fitted? It could be from a Range Rover, or maybe a 200tdi discovery. Is it definitely 10 spline? Identify the axle and parts spec should be simplified somewhat. |

@old school
my 90 was originally 3.5v8 100% discs on the back yes the axle was changed a long time ago but not by me and 99% from a RRC 100% 10spline the oil weeping only just started before the MOT last month, its not bad but annoys the f*** out of me I do all my own work and all new wheel bearings and seals fitted July 2024 I work aboard and just wanted to have all the parts I need at home when I get back mid October I just had my wife check the garage (not happy) and send me fotos of what spare seals I had in the box, everything labeled so easy for her (sad I know) and I have the seals in stock, except for the small one that goes into the axle housing, but as JST said u don't need it, and I cant remember checking it July 2024 i .............................cheers ivan 2016 Discovery 4 1989 90 CSW V8 (fully rebuilt and running like a dream) 1996 defender tray back fully rebuilt/loaded for challenge events |
