Anything allowing more free flowing exhaust will help.

it makes the turbo spool up slightly faster.
it also gets rid of the issue of the passenger's feet feeling hot (assuming the steering wheel is on the right) on a long drive. it also changes the smell of the exhaust. you can also consider removing the mid box, but keep the smaller one at the end. it sounds nice. The defender has migrated, leaving the owner behind. |

I doubt CAT is much of an obstruction assuming not blocked, same with muffler etc. This would only create a small amount of HP gain at higher RPM when the engine is probably screaming already and will make no difference to normal driving and acceleration. My current Td5 has the cat and I recently drove the same year 110 with the CAT removed and there was no noticeable difference other than some turbo whistle. The CT (MOT) in France is not too intelligent, compared to say the German TuV, but there is still the risk that emissions equipment is noticed as being absents. Unless the cat is blocked I would keep it just fine. |

If there are concerns about failing an MOT, some companies do Cat shells, they look like a CAT but are empty inside. Or buy an early TD5 that don’t have CATs🤷♂️😁😁

l removed the CAT and EGR from my 2005 Defender TD5 and noticed no difference at all.

Removing the cat is beneficial for any vehicle. It is a restriction. Here is a more technical break down…
The goal for any vehicle looking to get better performance is to try and max out the coldest and highest air density in the combustion chamber. A cat will reduce the emissions being exhausted in the exhaust stroke, in turn reducing how much air is being sucked into the combustion chamber giving rough running or in other words can give reducing the amount of air density in the chamber. Removing a cat and egr maxes your air density leading to a clean burn. A TD5 runs very clean hence even on over fuelling you won’t see a lot of smoke for a standard remap. A cat is only for smoke something I believe hence why when it first came out it wasn’t needed. Another example is simply driving up hill and not having to drop a gear, I can pull a steep incline on pavement in 5th gear, before had to drop from either 4th or 3rd. Now it’s not a supra so don’t expect crazy results but you will have a smoother and healthier running truck in turn which will give you longevity. Hope this helps. |
