Check your fuel pressure regulator. They often leak and then run around the back of the engine washing oil off and becoming black with clutch dust.

Thanks - had a feel round there, and the FPR itself is dry - no leaks from the unions etc and no diesel-smelling fluids.
However, on the underside of it, where it's bolted to the block, and under the inlet runners of 4 / 5 there's oil - not a massive amount, but enough to make your fingers dirty... |

Mine used to leak on the inlet side - check that it isn't the alternator/vacuum pump join. There's a seal between the two which can fail, especially (as in my case) if the bearing on the back of the alternator has failed and the vacuum pump is doing the heavy lifting as a result. 1990 Defender 110 200TDI Camper - now converted to Td5 power

The rocker cover gasket doesn't appear to be leaking much at all - however I need to do the injector loom at some point, so I've got a new gasket, cam plug thing and O ring on the way anyway..
Hopefully it's not the rear main seal!! |
