Erratic Signal Front Left Wheel Speed Sensor

Hi All!

After my truck rebuild, I've been driving him around and every now and then ABS would kick in when stopping and sometimes traction control will also kick in if I applied some throttle when in first gear. Last Saturday, both the ABS & TC light came on but the truck drove normally and had no issues / dramas. After a while, the lights went off and the ABS & TC started doing their thing again.

I plugged in my GAP IIDTool BT when I got home and it give me the Fault ABS-Brake Module, C0031-2F (A8 ) Front Left Wheel Speed Sensor - General Signal Failure - Signal is Erratic.

My mechanic sais to bu a new wheel speed sensor. He also said that while we were at it, I should buy two so we can preemptively change out the right front wheel speed sensor as well. I'm about to order them but would still like to know what all y'all think. Thanks in advance!

I would only change the left sensor. I see no point in changing the right one.

Since the problems started after a rebuild, could it be that the sensor is not sufficiently inserted?

Hi Johan_B,

We figured the other sensor might miss his buddy and decide to pack up as well

Will have them check about the insertion of the sensor, but just to be on the safe side I already ordered the parts. On the bright side, the front sensors will now be new and I have a spare for just in case.

Now I just hope the rear sensors play along and not give me problems until maybe the next rebuild some 20 to 30 years down the line

I had a similar problem after i changed my brake pads, discs and front left stub axle. Checking the speed sensor reading in my diagnostic machine pointed to the front left wheel not matching the other wheel speeds. I bought a new sensor but it turned out that the original sensor needed pushing back down into the hub a little bit. 1953 80"

Thank you for that!

Now, is this a simple matter of loosening a nut, pushing sensor further in, retighten nut and done? The parts I ordered are supposedly going to arrive by end of day tomorrow but I can't get a schedule with my mechanic until some time Wednesday next week so I thought to try and do the simple thing first and see if that solves the problem. I'm also afraid that if I wait too long, the problem may give birth to other problems and that's the last thing I need right now. No Better Friend, No Worse Enemy

If I remember correct you just push the sensor in, no screws holding it in place. The advice I received was to push it all the way in until it couldn't go any further, and then gently turn the hub which would cause the pulse ring on the CV joint to push the sensor out if there was interference.

Thank you for the advice.

I actually tried to push them in yesterday but didn't really have the leverage position so it didn't budge.

Will try again probably on Saturday when I have a bit more time and help to try and sort it.

Mine was a bit difficult to push down, but where the wire goes into the silver sensor there is a raised section which enabled a spanner to be slid on. wiggling the spanner and pushing down at the same worked for me. 1953 80"

The sensor sits inside a copper cage which sits in the machined aperture in the hub casting.
You can twist the sensor carefully to try and move in further down.
Be careful not to break the top where the cable enters.

Thanks for that, Screbble.

Will take note of the the copper cage part number, just in case. Still waiting on the sensors I ordered as there were a few storms that passed by locally and delayed delivery. Hoping to get them today but may not be until tomorrow then probably on Friday, going up to the mechanic to have it done while having a few things checked and sorted.

Actually cleaned and reseated the sensors and that seemed to do the trick for a while but then the ABS/TC issues came back but not as frequent and not as violent now. So I guess I was on the right track to order the sensors. No Better Friend, No Worse Enemy
