You can get the oil changed when the vehicle demands it. Whether or not it's replaced again at the service interval will depend on how many miles the vehicle has done since it was changed. So if your Defender demands an oil change at 12,000 and then the two year service is at 15,000 they probably won't change the oil again and it's only done 3,000 Last edited by lightning on 23rd Sep 2025 5:22pm. Yes, that was how I understood it and was going to approach it.
What is a bit odd to me is that why my service sheet doesn't mandate an oil change at service time but the sheet posted by L3785 does. We both have the same engine I think, & I am guessing that we all have the ECU countdown to oil change in the service menu. It doesn't really matter as I'll be going off what the ECU dictates or better anyway, but it does explain some of the confusion on this thread and the similar thread in 'general and technical' [/quote] |

I wonder whether it’s taken into account that you’ve already done an oil change and therefore won’t mandate it at the service? (Whereas I’ve not yet changed the oil as I’ve only done 6,500 miles so far.)
Although, even if it is that, it’s strange for it not to be standardised (especially if the service cost would be the same for us both!!!) 2025MY Defender 90 D250 X-Dynamic HSE | Santorini Black with Black Pack |

The downloadable service sheets have always been the same - no engine oil change at any service interval. I can't explain why they differ from yours.
The service and oil change requirements within the computer DO change and at very different rates. The service will count down at miles driven but oil change countdown will do it's own thing and drop a lot faster than miles driven. Quite reassuring really and shows that the oil quality sensors are doing their job (at least I hope it does) I can't imagine many people would get to the 21K maximum without being prompted by the ECU for an oil change first..but maybe my driving is bad In terms of cost, an oil change alone (from main dealer) is a lot cheaper than a service and oil change..around half the cost. To confuse matters further services are always quoted as being WITH an oil change. Good old JLR. |

Hi,
We have a 21MY D250 90 which is on 2 yearly 21,000 ml service intervals. I have 24MY D300 Range Rover Sport - that is on 1 year 10,500 mile service intervals and it states exactly that on the VISTa build sheet when I bought it. Apparently a select range of VIN numbers have the one year interval - and it’s not just sliding in a additional oil change - the entire service interval has been shunted up - why my brake fluid needs a change at 2 years (second service) and SWMBO’s 90 has lasted 4 years (second service!!!!) is beyond me. Money making by JLR comes to mind. I would have been happy with “oil change” “Service A”, “oil change”, “service B”, oil change” etc if it was required to preserve the engine, but just shunting up the entire service schedule makes no sense (to me as an engineer). Perhaps the service change has carried over to select 3.0 ltr Defenders too? Change the oil every 10,000 miles at the most. lt's cheaper than an engine.
