Td5 Startup Thumping Noise
Good morning All,

My first post.....

Was hoping for some help on a noise I have on startup.

When I start my truck up, I get a somewhat thumping noise that will last about 20 seconds max then stops instantly. If I drive without letting the noise stop it turns into a tick but stops after a few feet of driving. It will never come back throughout the drive. It doesn't thump all the time, never when hot. The noise matches the revs when accelerating.

I am really tempted to pull the injectors and renew the seals and washers, but I have no solid evidence those are the culprit.

Here is a link to the startup noise and you can hear it stop,

If i don't let the noise stop, and drive a bit it will turn into a tick, in this video it is hard to hear,

So, this is my diagnostics so far,
No smoke from exhaust, all plugs are dry, truck has 175,000km, oil level hasn't risen, coolant reservoir has no oil. I have dumped fuel additives with no help, and I run shell diesel and no blowby.

It isn't too concerning as the truck runs fine, feels strong and I don't have any really concerning symptoms only the noises I hear.

I am thinking possibly a burnt valve seal or possibly just injector #5. Could it be #5 warming up?

Maybe a dodgy fuel filter, it is an aftermarket, thought i order Mahle

This one is getting my head scratching.

Any ideas are helpful.... Thank you

Mine does the thumping when cool/cold on startup sometimes. I think it is down to a five cylinder engine but only four glow plugs.

next time it does it, put your ear to the air intake and you can possibly also listen to exhaust note.

Mine had a heavy 'thump' that started just after an oil change and would last 10 or so seconds after startup and then disappear. it has since gone away.

Best explanation was a sticking valve, it was very clearly audible through the air intake.

This was a very different sound than the one they make when the 5th cylinder knocks a little on a very very cold day. 2003 Defender 90 Td5 CSW Belize Green - "Betty"

yes, I thought something was up with one of the valves because this started with outside temps being 25+ degrees so far from a cold start. The glow plugs activating also will give you an understanding if it will be a cold start which they have not turned on this season.

I'll try and find a conditioner to add before my next oil change to see if I can unstick this but seems to slowly go away......

Thank you for the response!

Since you have the same local stores then me what flush would you recommend? its not worth removing the head and freeing it up.

Have you tried "Hot Shot Stiction" ? Seems like proper stuff with testing from Shell and ASTM Testing

I havent done any kind of flush, not really a believer.

Id be tempted to do some more regular oil changes for a while and see how it goes. 2003 Defender 90 Td5 CSW Belize Green - "Betty"

yeah, i did this, the stiction is an oil additive not a flush

I agree, do not like flushes but never tried an oil additive......

Check your manifold for broken bolts or warping. Kinda sounds like that to me. Your heat shield looks loose as well.

Thought about that but I sprayed some soapy water on it and go not bubbles and I have since fastened the heat shield bolts. I couldn't find the support bracket that mounts to the exhaust
