Random selection of Low Range transmission
Has anyone experienced or heard of issues with the random selection of the low range transmission on Defender? I have a MY25 D250, which after a few months of fault free running, has started to behave oddly with it showing that low range has been selected whilst in motion when the low range button on the dashboard has not been pressed. The car has behaved in the same way on a number of occasions, with the speed ranging from a standing start to 50mph, the only common thing that the throttle is always being used when it is randomly selected. The other odd thing that is present after it happens is that the gear shift consistently displays that I need to unlock before shifting (even though I have pressed the button and the gear has been selected). Once I turn the car on and off again, the gear shift message is no longer present. It has been back to the dealer, no fault codes found, software updates installed and typically didn’t do it on the 14 mile test drive completed. But it did it again a few days later so it is still present. It is so random - can go for a few weeks without appearing and then pops up again – it’s really frustrating and I am bemused as my understanding is that only the driver pressing the button on the dash can initiate the change from high to low range.

Does anything come up in the guage cluster? I've found that to engage low range you need to stop, go into neutral, press the button, wait, then set off. But from what you've described, it engages while you are driving I'd think that is a real problem. Does it shift gears alright? Current (LR):

Hi, when it happens, the gauge cluster says speed too high, stop and select neutral. Its behaving as if the low range button has been pressed whilst the car is in motion. The green low range indication on the gauge cluster remains flashing (as does the low range button itself) rather than going steady, presumably as the transfer box won’t engage because it has detected the car is in motion. The gearbox itself appears unaffected, the car drives normally in D or S mode as it did before this odd behaviour started and the transfer box correctly operates between high and low range as it should when the car is stationary and in neutral.

If so that'll be a whole new switch panel, then, as that whole area is one piece.

If you go to this page: https://parts.jaguarlandroverclassic.com/p...and-rover/
And click the little '+' next to "Heater Control (19A522A)" you'll be able to see all the variants of it and go through to find the assembly that best suits your vehicle description, then click the "+" again and see the part number. Current (LR):
