Well, that was rubbish..!!
After fitting new bearings to the two Aux. Idlers, a new belt tensioner and belt the stupid 'whirring' noise still persists. A couple of people suggested that the most likely culprit now was the big, double row bearing behind the fan. New bearing ordered and arrived, so Friday lunch time I got stuck in.... I spent 8 hours on Friday and 8 hours on Saturday - struggled like mad getting the new bearing home. Finally got it all boxed back up and..... it's still making exactly the same noise. In fairness, I wasn't expecting much as, when I got the old bearing out, I knew straight away that there was nothing wrong with it. That didn't help my motivation trying to refit the new bearing. The issue is definitely with something driven by the belt as the noise only happens with the belt fitted. All that's left is the Alternator, Water Pp and Crank Pulley. Don't fancy changing any of those.... Any ideas on what/how to check next..?? I'm off to Assen in the Netherlands then onto Kiel in Northern Germany in 6 weeks and need this sorting, but am currently out of ideas and inspiration.... ![]() Cheers, Dave. 2002 Land Rover 110 Td5 Utility 1990 Suzuki GSXR 1100L 1980 Yamaha RD 350LC 1976 Yamaha RD 400C |

There's a bearing on the front of the alternator which is partially supported by the vacuum pump output. Mine failed, I only got a slight whirring noise but did get an oil leak between alternator and vacuum pump.
The alternator and vac pump are really quite simple to remove, disassemble and reassemble. Parts are cheap too 1990 Defender 110 200TDI Camper - now converted to Td5 power |

Your other option is to get something like a long screwdriver which you can place between your ear and various parts of the (running) engine to pinpoint the noise. 1990 Defender 110 200TDI Camper - now converted to Td5 power

Hazza, you star - thank you..!!
I shall do some digging today. I did originally think it could be Alternator related as it sounds like the noise is coming from the offside. Is there a way to blip the throttle from the engine bay on a Td5..?? 2002 Land Rover 110 Td5 Utility 1990 Suzuki GSXR 1100L 1980 Yamaha RD 350LC 1976 Yamaha RD 400C |

No problem
If you can pinpoint where the sound is coming from it should save you some time/money. Unfortunately there's no way to blip the throttle from the engine bay. But the sound may be 'louder' if you can use the stethoscope-type screwdriver method and might not need the engine to be revved. 1990 Defender 110 200TDI Camper - now converted to Td5 power |

Do you get any squeaks when turning off the engine?
I could post you a spare alternator (does not charge) to test the alternator theory but post might not be worth it. Running the engine with no belt will soon remove alternator/water pump from the equation. 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

I've just nipped out and used my Mechanics Stethoscope 😉
I listened to the water pp and the centrifugal oil filter - both produced a steady, low rumble. I then listened to the alternator and it makes an horrific noise, like the proverbial 'nails on a blackboard'.... I can say with confidence that it's got a bad bearing (or something). So, my options are; Buy a rebuild kit (less keen on this as she's my daily drive and I'm crap with electrics) Or Buy a new Alternator - which a Google search shows a range of between £150 and £950.... Eek.!! Can anybody recommend one at the 'lower end' < £250..?? Also, it looks a bit of a pig to change. Are there any good guides..?? Many thanks for all of your help so far - much appreciated. Sounds like you have located the noise.
I have only ever replaced mine with a Denso one and one that comes with (i think) 2 year warranty. The two hardest 's parts for me are, getting the the three pin plug off the back of the alternator and getting the bottom bolt (which is hidden by the tensioner pulleys) back in place. Last time I did a swap it was done in my dinner hour from work prior to that, it took me at least 2 hours of swearing. https://maltings4x4store.co.uk/alternators...Xw6SXyoHgH 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

Why not buy one of the cheaper offerings, and a rebuild kit for your original one?
That way you'll have a running vehicle and known good quality alternator on the shelf which you can rebuild at your leisure. There's no 'electrics' involved in the alternator rebuild. Just screws, bolts, bearings and seals. 1990 Defender 110 200TDI Camper - now converted to Td5 power |

Thanks John... 👍👍
Swearing seems to be an integral part of any/all Land Rover maintenance... 😄 Did you have to remove much/anything to do the swap..?? Is it easier from underneath..?? Cheers, Dave 2002 Land Rover 110 Td5 Utility 1990 Suzuki GSXR 1100L 1980 Yamaha RD 350LC 1976 Yamaha RD 400C |

If so, what are you getting at? I hear a chirping noise when I turn it off, but also at around 2000 rpm. I suspect the viscous fan bearing... ![]() Defender 110 Puma 2.4 |
