2.4 turbo change
Hi all,

I’m in a situation where with my LHD 2008 2.4 Puma Aircon overseas I will have to change my turbo on my driveway over there. Above average mechanical ability but I haven’t done a turbo before. Can anyone who has done this give me a step by step guide to doing this with any tips that may ensure a good fit. I have a new Garrett turbo with all gaskets, bolts and studs in the box.
As well as any guide to this should I change the oil feed pipe ? and lastly does anyone know if it can be achieved without removing the AC compressor on top. Had a look and seems like the turbo when unbolted can just about squeeze past the AC compressor but not sure.
Currently at home in the UK so can grab any parts I need and take them out to the vehicle for the job.
Cheers.

Providing the triangular exhaust bolts aren’t seized it’s not too bad a job, I found the trickiest bit aligning oil return gasket and bolts.
I used the nakatanenga gasket and Holts fire gum exhaust paste which worked a treat.
Fit new nuts and bolts too. 2023 Defender L663 V8

No need to remove the AC compressor.

You will find it straight forward as a person of above average mechanical ability

Remove flexible air pipework, remove exhaust studs/nuts from both flanges, remove oil feed and drain. Turbo will come out. If I remember correctly there might be a bracket on the exhaust manifold that needs to come off.

Some of the studs/nuts will be dry/rusty on the exhaust - get the penetrating fluid on them!

Swap the plastic elbow over to the new turbo then refit.

When I fitted my replacement I could not get the oil return fitted to the underside of the turbo in situ. Instead found it easier to disconnect the drain from the block, fit the drain to the turbo and install in one lump.

Thanks heaps guys,

Some good tips there already, especially the one about fitting the oil return to the turbo first, I probably wouldn’t have done that and would be swearing away. Will be interesting to see how it goes.

Should I change the oil return pipe AND the oil feed pipe as well for new ones or will this make the job too difficult? Engine was a drop in replacement from the UK a couple of years ago and is pretty fresh as the vehicle is hardly used. The current turbo works but is sticking and throwing it into limp mode after a while.

IIRC I did not have to remove the A/C compressor. Puma 110" SW

I didn't replace the oil feed or drain for new, just re-used existing. Two years later all fine Thumbs Up > 110 XS Double Cab

i did it my self too, see that you can reach the oil return pipe bolt with your ratched extensions from underneath. also i had 2 seized bolts on the triangular exhaust flang wich i left in place, they wouldn't budge.

i just put new gaskets and reused everything else.

took me 3 hours alone i have a LHD but my ventialtion box is gone so i have more space.
