I cannot think how fragments of the turbo - which is part of the intake system can reach to the sump.
Usually bits of the turbo get stuck in the intercooler... worse case they are ingested and potentially cause valve damage or scratch the bore. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

There's an oil feed to the turbo which will drain into the sump...

I agree with Dinnu. The only connection between turbo and sump is the small oil drain pipe from the turbo and nothing large can get down that. Anything passing from turbo to sump via the induction system would have to pass through the intercooler, inlet manifold, past the valves, then somehow get past a piston into the sump, so that's not going to happen.
The fragments in your sump will have been the aftermath of the event that caused the turbo failure, not the other way round. Something major has failed and debris, probably in the lubricant, has then destroyed the turbo. I'm afraid it's new engine time. ![]() |

I think it depends how 'large' 'large' is - it's pretty subjective. Did they send pics?
It should be fairly obvious if it's bigger than would fit through the oil drain, and if they have the sump off to clean it all out they should be able to inspect the bottom end, and it's not too much work to pull the rocker cover off and inspect the top end too.. |

Can you post the pictures you were sent? It might be possible to identify the fragments.
