2010 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 HT Stornoway Grey
2.4 minor overhaul
Hello all,

I have decided to do a mini refresh on my 2.4 Puma, it has circa 90k miles on it now gets serviced probably every 3-5k miles (i work 10/10 offshore and have place in the USA now so rarely in the UK)

It was previously tuned with Hybrid turbo, intercooler, straight through exhaust stainless boost pipes etc.

I know the common census now is hybrid turbo's are no better than standard, i have also noticed a fair bit of smoke lately and don't ever think i had much luck with this hybird turbo.

I was in touch with Alive and they want ~£2500 for supply / fit of a standard turbo, am i missing something? what is the current correct part number for a defender 2.4 standard turbo? LR018396
LR018497?

I'm completely fine with doing the turbo myself..

JLR have them at £2300 elsewhere online reputable sellers have them in the 7-800 mark? where is the best to buy them from? are the ones on LR parts / Island4x4 the same as the classic Land rover ?

I will also fit new oil pipes at the same time, what else would be worth while doing VCV? Any other suggestions?

I will bolt it all on myself and drive down to alive for the tuning to be re-done for a standard turbo and checked out

I also don't want to spend an absolute fortune on it doing injectors etc as i might as well buy a M57 conversion etc...

Liam

Turbo Technics sell brand new Garrett units for a very good price. I had one off them a couple of years ago > 110 XS Double Cab

Hi Hank, and they are the same as what JLR classic are selling or am i msising something?

Alive stated they would only fit "genuine" turbos so that means JLR pricing? or am i missing something?

As mentioned the factory turbo is Garret, last time I looked they were around £800 - £900.
And that is a lot of money.

I think you can find the model no the casing, so long as that matches you’ll be good to go.

Personally I’d steer well clear of any recon, only go for new.

Just my opinion of course. _\Hennessey|Venom| F5/___

It would appear so, they all have the same SKU.

Bit slow on the reply here sorry but yes. OEM unit is Garrett so the JLR one will be Garrett just with the JLR markup on top.

I didn't replace the turbo oil lines when I did mine. Tip - remove the oil return form the block, fit it to turbo beforehand and then "post" the oil return down to the block when fitting the turbo. It is a pig to fit the oil return to the underside of the turbo in-situ and disconnecting from the block only takes a few minutes.

How old is your VCV? For the cost of them and the time it takes to swap out there is certainly no harm in fitting one.

Injectors... I have an ebay saved search set up for part number "DCRI107060" - injectors come up fairly regularly. I've had five brand new boxed DENSO injectors over the last few years circa £50 each which I used to swap out the crap remanufactured ones. Plus a spare on the shelf.
That said, blackwolf is on his original injectors with good mileage on them so if it ain't broke...

Here is the unit Turbo Technics supplied me
