M57 Valve stem Seals
My M57 has always billowed a bit of smoke on start up or after idling for a while and then revved.

Suspected the valve stem seals, and I've been putting it off for a while even having all the bits, but decided to bite the bullet this weekend and strip her down to do it on the hottest weekend of the year so far (Saturday anyway)

Checked the timing with the pin in the flywheel and also removed the stater and marked that as well so I knew it was coming up as it's a bit of a fiddle to get it bang on,and it was a bit off to what it should be, tool wouldn’t fit as it should in either cam, it’s always seemed a bit lazy when revved, but just thought that how it was.

Bought the 3d printed tool from Ebay and did it with the head still on just have to make sure the two pistons your working on are at TDC (or the valves will fall out lol) I used a very techie ty-rap and watched for it to peak, which to be fair it worked brilliantly, the only bit that was a faff was getting the tiny collets back in with 60-year-old eyes.

Timed it back up correctly, and double checked it, just to be on the safe side and reassembled
And…….no more smoke and rev response/pick up much smoother

The difference in the hole size between old and new seal was massive so they were well worn and they the defiantly dried out a bit.

All in all worth the effort.

What mileage is on her Les, I'm going to be changing injectors and rocker cover to a 35d end of the month, might do these also, I've 145,000 miles on mine.

Hi Shane,

Unfortunately I have no idea on mileage, but I believe the guy selling them they are all around that mark, James and Mo got there's from the same guy. Regards

Hi Shane

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/276467071329

Lot cheaper if you know someone with printer, but I was in the same boat and it needs to be the right material as well, this did the job and is still unmarked

Will see if I can find the plugs link Regards
