Black fuel pump looks like combustion gassen (and carbon) in fuel. Possible bad injector seals. When engine is runnung it can let combusion gasses into the fuel galery of engine head. If it is just a bit, it will make fuel a bit black, beacuse of carbon. If it is more, it can make bubbles in fuel resulting in engine stop a purge needed. I have seen Discovery 2 TD5 with crack in engine head resulting in non-running engine after 5 minutes. Purge cycle let it run for next 5 minutes. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

I had assumed hydrocarbons from cylinders.
It purges fine and I have tried extra long purge but nothing seems to work.
I assume it's maybe just leaking a little.

I just wondered if it was possible for it to completely stop fuel in the gallery.

Measuring pressure at FPR even cranking never exceeded 4bar so I guess this is not the case as pressure may go up if gases present under cranking pressure?

If there is gas leak from combustion chamber to fuel lines in engine head, it will not rise fuel pressure, because the fuel pressure regulator will limit them maximal pressure to 4 Bar, but it will introduce gasses in fuel, and it will result in "not working" highe pressure pumps in injectors. Carbon from combustion gasses ir weri fine, so it will dissolve in fuel and result in slight black smear on in takn fuel pump.
This is not easy to diagnose. I had to place a bit of clear hose into the fuel lines from and to engine, to be able to look for any bubles in fuel. This was last think to do, before removing engine head. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

Do you think it is possible that the leaking combustion gasses could stop the starting of the engine?
It's literally the only thing I can think of.
I could pull the injections and fit new seals I guess to try..
Literally I cannot believe that it's been so hard to find a fault with it Crying or Very sad

If there are any bubles in fuel system, it will not be able to pump fuel through injectors into the engine (high pressure has to be made in ijnectors itself - it usese PD system). Bubles from not enough fuel, from some hole in fuel system or from combustion gasses pased into the fuel system - all makes the same result.
With enough fuel in tank (like half a tank) try the fuel system purge cycle once or twice. It should purge any bubles. This is basic and simple thing to test first. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

I think you might have got to the point of dropping the fuel tank and cleaning it out...the "black diesel" is a worry....
