I'd be looking at live data.. rail pressure, manifold pressure and your maf figures, see if there are any oddities there in spite of having no fault codes.. start off at idle and then whilst driving under varying load..

Bearing in mind the lack of fault codes, hot gearbox tunnel, lack of power, I wonder if either the handbrake is not releasing fully, but not showing the warning light, or brakes binding? Does it free wheel easily down a slope in neutral?

Turbo EA or VCV going under, possibly, I’d be tending to think the latter here. _\Hennessey|Venom| F5/___

It does seem to freewheel but I’ll check the handbrake. Not noticed any brakes binding though. |

I've had a similiar issue with a sticking Turbo Actuator. Although switching the engine off and on again would cure it for an indeterminate and random ammount of time. I had the turbo completely replaced in the end.

the actuator cycles open & closed a few times when the engine turns off for maybe 5 seconds. is this normal? looking at rough live data the turbo seems to boos tokay (only checked at idle) How would I check the VCV? look at rail pressure on live data? |

That’s the EGR when you turn the engine off. 2008 2.4 110 Utility Station Wagon XS.

VCV issues can be low power in higher gears, it especially shows in 6th where it feels like power is lacking and you might have to drop down to 5th.
In winter there can be a rougher / hunting idle as well, but isn’t 100% reliable on this, but it will have a decrease in MPG and run rough really when cold, but better when warm and up to temp. Eventually top end power goes, and then down the line it’ll start cutting out when cold, but will restart. As Brickbox mentions shutting down the engine that’ll be the EGR in that case, if there is a fault with that say stuck open then it should log a DTC (fault code), it might even illuminate the amber dash light. If the turbo actuator is sticky, if it sticks open or closed then, that will trigger limp mode, to protect the engine, the should be a DTC on the OBD2 system logged there if that’s the case. A little 3 in 1 light lil on the pivots seems to do the trick I find for me, on a regular basis with that. The curious factor is here that the VCV does not flag up a DTC if it’s failing, but you can get symptoms. The good part is that it’s not very expensive and not too difficult to change even DIY with care. The VCV will affect the rail pressures yes, but you’d need to know the parameters of expected pressures to compare. After I changed the VCV on mine, there was so much power that was noticeable after, it also doesn’t need programming or learning it will sort itself and self learn after time by itself. So if you see a DTC for anything Turbo related, look that direction, but if not I’d tend to think VCV. There are some other things that are possible as well, but a DTC check would be a good start if you can. I seem to remember acording to Blackwolf on here that the VCV regulates fuel flow to the LP side of the fuel pump, before the HP side, before going to the rail > injectors. So it is critical for engine operation, but it will get damaged by contaminated fuel like water or diesel bug etc, but will happen over time, and wear does happen as well and reduces its performance over time. A lack of high end power in the region you mention in the 56 to 70mph bracket, is a symptom I remember, and it might stay that way for year or more, then down the line might randomly cut out, then gets worse gradually. Hope there might be some ideas here that might be useful to you. ![]() ___\⭐️Lone|Star|State/___ ____\We|Will|Win/___ ____/🇬🇧🇺🇸\____ _//*⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰*\\_ |

The OP states that his vehicle is a 2.2 and VCV issues are extremely rare on the 2.2.

True, much less likely but still possible.
Contaminated MAF Sensor could be possible, considering its speed related, or at least seems to be. _\Hennessey|Venom| F5/___ ___\⭐️Lone|Star|State/___ ____\We|Will|Win/___ ____/🇬🇧🇺🇸\____ _//*⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰*\\_ |

Mr Peabod, you haven’t by chance erroneously jumped in a series vehicle?
Joking aside, I hope you get it sorted at no/low cost. |
