2.4 TDCI idle speeds - SOLVED
Another strange fault that I would really appreciate some advice on

Spent hours trying to find info - maybe using wrong search words

All of the TDCIs I have had in the past have some kind of software in the ECU that lifts the RPMs up to 1000 when moving. I noticed this most when coasting up to traffic lights and then pressing the clutch - car sits at 1000 for maybe a second then drops to around 800. All correct I would say.

My latest project - 2008 110 2.4 does something different

Press the clutch when coasting to the lights - drops immediately to 800 … come to a stop and there is a very quick blip to 1000 and back to 800

I am guessing there is a speed sensor somewhere that tells the car it’s moving - but where?

The speedo is reading fine - I get the same data on my nanocom.

Billy basic spec - not even ABS so can’t be getting it from the wheel sensors. Could be the clutch switch? Tried pumping the clutch doesn’t seem to make any difference.

Any pointers would be appreciated.

As a long shot, could it be the non ABS models just behave this way? Not had one before. 2010 90 LHD soft top

could it be to do with the clutch sensor?
I believe if you discount the sensor you get a change in revs but I can't recall the exact scenario.
easy enough to disconnect and see what happens. if there's no change I would suspect that sensor is not working as it should. Thumbs Up
good luck

Speed input is from the speedo transducer.

You may want to do a forum search on "idle jack".

Its called idle jack.

Its possible that your high/low range selector switch is stuck thinking its in low range. I do not recall from memory if it closes the circuit on high or on low range, but a quick check is to check with multimeter on reaistance setting and check in the switch that it is working. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Great advice chaps

I’ll get out there tomorrow and try both the low range switch and the clutch switch

Searching for idle jack right now 2010 90 LHD soft top

Couldn’t wait till the morning - it’s bothering me

So unplugged the clutch sensor (looks new) and it holds the revs high between gears - that would snuggest its working?

The high/low - well I get the diff lock light as expected, but with it in low range - the revs come up to 1000 as I pick up speed (in first and second at least)

Back into high range - behaves as before

Question is ….. what exactly does the low range switch do? Does it say ‘I am in low range’? Or does it say ‘I am NOT in high range’?

I’ll get under car tomorrow and try to test what it’s doing - can also swap bits from my other 110.

As a side note I get p0234 turbo overboost and the typical MAF in range but higher/lower than expected (new turbo, new MAF and MAP genuine Bosch).

Could be the ECU doesn’t know whats going on! 2010 90 LHD soft top

The clutch switch requires a closed circuit if you disconnect it, unlike some previous models you cannot just unplug it or you’ll have the issues you’ve noticed.

The clutch switch works alongside the idle jack as mentioned also.

In low range, the revs are a little higher if I remember rightly with the clutch switch working as it should, if the clutch switch is disconnected and a closed circuit then the revs will be slightly lower.
The anti stall will still work in all states though, both high range and low.

I ran a long time with the clutch switch bridged / closed, I prefer how it drives, I think there is a small improvement in MPG.
The downside is, I believe the clutch switch momentarily cuts torque by approx 25% during gear changes, but is designed to I think reduce peak torque via transmission components.
This protects a little from extreme shock loading, and extreme momentary torque on the clutch, and various other components.

I’m 50/50 on that issue really, I used it like that as the clutch switch when it fails causes a Rev hang, aka an unwanted throttle input when put in gear.
The clutch switch wasn’t working, so I bridged it, but at a later date I replaced the clutch master and switch with it, and as it is working as it should, I went back to the original factory set up.

I’m not convinced however, that, the slight torque input changes due to the clutch switch is ideal for the drive members though, but neither would a very sudden very high torque input by an accidental gear change say on a surface where grip was suddenly found, in that case a lower torque input, even just a smaller percentage might well save a halfshaft from being broken. _\Hennessey|Venom| F5/___

So had a route around

Found this connector … not connected to anything also found twisted wires - think they are the same colour

Any ideas? 2010 90 LHD soft top

Now I can zoom in …. I can see white with violet tracer on the ‘spare’ plug and white with black tracer on the twisted pair

This is interesting thou …. With the wires separated it behaves the way it should …. Ie the light lift in revs when moving

Just need to find where they should be connected to and probably get hold of a new plug to fit 2010 90 LHD soft top

This is a useful site for those stray connectors:

https://www.lrworkshop.com/connectors/defender-2007/colour

The black and white/black pair look to be for the transfer case hi/low range switch.

Hi

It looks as if what you have discovered is the DIY fix for the engine surge that is supposed to help with gear changing?
