TD5 throttle issue
Any ideas

I have a td5 defender and seems that the power is dampened, sluggish when pulling off as if it takes time to build the RPM up.

When it’s going it’s completely fine however if I pull off on a hill I need to ride the clutch to get it moving

I have checked the following so far.

Map/maf sensor, unplugged MAF, replaced map sensor.

Disconnect clutch switch

Checked the diff lock switch as I know when it’s in low this will automatically dampen the power response - doesn’t seem to make a difference either way.

Also check the Westgate to see if it’s seized, (it’s not)

The ECU has been remapped at some point in its life, could this be a bad remap?

The speedo sensor was disconnected from the T box, it seemed more response with this being out, I don’t know if this is psychological…

Throttle pedal has been replaced also run a fresh wire from the loom to the throttle pedal as I know these can be temperamental.

I have also checked the plug going to the ecu, no oil etc

Does anyone have any ideas?

Does sound like a failed MAF, so is odd that no change with it disconnected or replaced. Assume all air intake system is clear.

You mentioned you checked the diff lock switch - it's actually the hi/lo switch you need to check. If the ECU thinks it's in Low but you're actually in High then it does give very damped throttle response. 1990 Defender 110 200TDI Camper - now converted to Td5 power

Mine is similar - and when I looked into it, quite a few people said that their TD5s don't pull well until the revs are up and it's on boost, it's just a characteristic of the engine. It's not like a 'typical' diesel that will pull stumps out of the ground from tickover...

Remapping may also accentuate it - as there's a lot more 'go' when it's up and running, which makes it feel very flat lower down..
