23L 300tdi engine
Hi all,
Wife n I were discussing how we love our engine and should things go pop in the future we'd love to keep it etc, then got into looking up it's code and what not...had a quick squint and it's a 23L engine. 'The google' seems to suggest that the Disco engines were stamped 23L and no mention of Defender engines marked as such.
Can anyone explain anymore? Are we looking at a historically swapped engine? Is this just a Landrover assembly line thing of putting whatever fit's in the hole and off the line?
I've got a ton of paperwork/history with our Defender, but no mention of anything like an engine swap.

Your v5 may show your engine number.

It's unlikely that anyone who swapped a defender 300, for an identical disco 300, would have bothered to update the v5, so, you might assume, that had such a swap happened, the v5 would continue to show the original number.

Further -

There is a form, maybe "888", but that's just from memory, and could well be incorrect, that you can submit to the dvla, with, iirc, a £5 charge, to get all the prior changes / history.

This would conclusively conclude the matter for you, if there was still doubt after the initial check.

Cheers Julian,
I just had a quick look at the V5 and the engine number matches the V5, so I guess I can assume it's probably the original engine from that. As you said, I can't imagine anyone bothering to update details with DVLA... The Yeti - 110 Camper https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic90308.html

Think yourself lucky you have a stamped number! Tdi engines were the most stolen item after doors and bonnets back in the day.

Lots were swapped under warranty by LR for cambelt problems, I have a 1996 that has a 23L, it was swapped out by LR dealer three years old after cambelt ran off the pulleys

I am sure the belt issue is well documented and widely discussed, but last week I helped a friend change the belt in his 300tdi and WOW half the belt was gone with a huge groove cut into the cover plate, loads of black fluff and belt bits everywhere.

My friend had purchased the upgrade kit with the flanged crank pulley. We changed a bunch including seals and she should be good for many more years!

Impressive to see though and satisfying to fix

Did you fit the revised injector pump bracket to cure the timing case warp?

Well that is a good question. I helped him out with tools and just easier to do it together. He was told the engine had had the timing belt mods, but obviously we found the crank pulley had no side guide and the belt was half gone.

I will tell him to check online and then on the car to make sure it was all done as it should. Its France and they tend to look at French info only which limits available knowledge compared to English. Especially land rovers.. I suppose if you are into the Citroens it would be the opposite..
