Ashcroft 1.2 transfer box
Morning all,

I think I'm finally ready to push the button and order the ashcroft 1.2 transfer box for my 90 TD5.. though I am onnthe fence about paying the extra for a 'sleeved' casing? Is it worth the extra for those that have gone with it? Generally I use the defender on the road maybe 3k miles a year, I'm just sick of driving at 60mph on the motorways so hoping the 1.2 let's me sit at 70mph easier.

Thanks all

If the engine has the grunt and ratios for rpm work then it will be a good upgrade.

After having the middle shaft bushing fail on a 73k puma I go for sleeved now. Cheers

It's got a stage 1 Alive tuning remap so hopefully the low end will be OK with the 1.2

Depends on lots more, run it though ashcroft calculator and see if revs are in right range, if so good to go. Cheers

Unless you have oversized tyres, run heavy, tow alot.on hilly areas and have roof rack loaded up and are on std diffs I am sure it will work fine. Cheers

I do have oversized tyres 265/65/18

Ran the calculator on their site and seems it should be a noticeable difference with motorway speeds which is the goal Thumbs Up

The R380/Td5 runs fairly high revs in stock at motorway speeds and comfortable can take another gear. I have a roamerdrive installed and mostly drive in '6th gear' above 55-60 mph no problem.

The problem with the 1.2 box I expect is in the lower gears where you start loosing overlap and find yourself searching for the right gear at certain speeds (3rd-4th). I am sure you get used to it.

When I got my Series it has two RR diffs (3.54) and it was awful to drive. I swapped it back to standard 4.7 diffs, much happier. You don't go far or fast in a Series so it does not matter that much.

Good luck, it will be fine.

It’ll be absolutely fine, you’ll love it, and yes the sleeved option is worth it, especially if it’s a keeper. I’m awaiting the arrival of my new transfer box from Dave

I have the 1.2 ratios and am running an Alive GTB 450 turbo and custom remap giving me 185 bhp (I deliberately kept the tune on the low side of what's possible). So plenty of power for the 1 2 transfer box.

On motorways the 1.2 ratios are awesome and so long range cruising and fuel economy is great.

I find pulling away in 1st a bit of a faff as it needs extra oomph to get going. I have to rev higher than feels natural to pull away and build speed progressively. If I don't build the revs up I move a bit before it loses momentum which then builds up again as you pull away. Not ideal when pulling away into traffic and not picking up as quickly as you and other vehicles expect!

Clearly can be resolved by changing how I drive it, but thought I'd share my experience with it. TD5 hardtop to Puma inspired Poptop - my build thread

I ran a 1.2 box in a 300tdi 90 for fifteen years, did close to 100,000 motorway miles with it, transformed the vehicle for that use. I still have it but it’s long been relegated to boat launching and it’s still got the 1.2 box in (which is actually sleeved!). I was thinking about changing it back to 1.4 or the now available 1.3 ratio but haven’t actually bothered as it’s still perfectly useable.

I have always rebuilt LT230’s myself, but get Ashcroft to sleeve the casing as they are always worn. I also put in one piece diff spider and HD intermediate shaft as again these always have wear on them.
