The oil cooler is another possibility.

I had that on one I built a few years back. changed the head etc, it still did it. Turned out to be the oil cooler. I removed it (quite easy IIRC), and to test it, got a couple of bolts that fitted the union thread, drilled one right through the centre, tapped it and fitted an airline fitting. putting the plain bolt into the other hole of course! Then attached airline, stuck it in a bucket of water, hey presto bubbles.... I've still got the bolts here somewhere if you want them (no longer have a defender so no use to me) |

Oil cooler will more than likely be the suspect.

Oil in water is more likely to be a failed oil cooler than a head gasket. I discovered the exact same goopy mess the other day on my 120,000 mile 15P after an unplanned radiator removal. I am currently waiting for parts to change the oil cooler and water pump (and exhaust manifold while I'm at it). Not a complicated job and can be carried out without removing the exhaust manifold, but the turbo would need to come off to give you access. I'm only doing the manifold because it's blowing and thought I might as well while the turbo is off.

As a side note.... I cleaned the oil out of the water by adding some washing powder to the header tank.
do 10 miles or so, drain it, refill & repeat until the water stays clear. Took about 4 or 5 flushes but did the job. |

To be fair if you are stripping it to get the cooler out, I would be changing the water pump.

As I mentioned above, I was suggested to use washing powder (which breaks down oil) and it worked a treat. |
