No nipples?
Hi all

Just been under a 2013 Defender 90, 2.2 and there are no grease nipples on the front or rear prop shafts? The nipples are present on the UV joints but none on the shafts..

Is this normal on later model Defenders?

Hmmmm… So another great “sealed for life” idea?

Without replacing the shafts is there a method of getting grease into them?

I greased my prop splines..either pop the rubber dirt seal or use a syringe and thin pipe eased under it..either way you can get grease into it..
I think from memory mine were dropped off at the time I did it.

If you remove the prop shaft you can then pop off the rubber boot and slide the two halves apart to check the condition and regrease the bearings. Just make sure to mark the orientation of the two halves so they go back together the same way, thus keeping the phasing of the u-joints as they were.

Why did LR change to not having a nipple on the slider?
Mine has one on each there…

I’d have thought it was easier to have it than not have one, just so long as it isn’t overdone.
(Too much grease out in).

Perhaps so be people were pumping in far too much in the sliding joint, causing issues there.
Where it should be just some put in the sliding joint if a nipple / zerk is fitted. _\Hennessey|Venom| F5/___

- As log the rubber boot is in good condition, no need to regrease. With time the rubber will crack.

- You can tap 2 grease nipples, eack on opposite sides.

PD. That tiny 3 grams rubber boot costs around 20GBP Puma 110" SW

If you have ever taken a slip-joint apart, you'll know that a single grease nipple doesn't do much. Every one I've had apart has no way for the grease to get to more than just a few of the splines. Better to take it apart occasionally and grease it properly.

I'm curious, as I've had my shaft apart and it not actually what I would call a splined connection.. on a late puma it's about a dozen slots that are occupied with ball bearings held in place by a plastic cage.. no idea if that's a standard or if earlier couplings are actually machined mating splines..

Stock shafts, yes. Aftermarket, no.

So I'm not getting it wrong...my prop was original.. it had a series of grooves and a ball bearing cage..
Are you saying aftermarket props are actually splined?
