I find it quite remarquable, that there was - in fact - some sort of knocking sound when I was in the Alpes mountains mounting serpentine roads with changing rpm and many many load changes, too. The knocking occured in non loaded situations in 180° curves.
I've never been able to reproduce that sound. But, the very same day, the spline failed 2...3 hours later. And it did not fail under load but driving down a 180° curve. When I wanted to réengage the clutch after the curve, the spline didn't have any more contact. I had the truck towed by another 4x4 That strange knocking sound came from the drivetrain and it began a few days before, but occasionally. I concluded that - once @home - I had to check the drivetrain what I've never done and even forgotten after the installation of the new spline. |

The 2008 2.4 is in getting some attention. There is about 218,000kms covered (cannot remember the exact figure and the service book is in the Puma) and it is still on it's original shaft.
Conundrum. Do I get the shaft removed and checked while she is in or do I leave well enough alone? One of the theories about this failure is about misalignment. If mine is O.K. and everything is aligned and torqued correctly maybe it will not be when reassembled after the examination. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel 1992 110 200tdi csw -Zikali 2008 110 2.4 tdci csw-Zulu 2011 110 2.4 tdci csw-Masai |

Noooo...get it looked at and try a so called upgrade...
Is that not why we have a landrover.. A vehicle that let's you make so many mods/changes..I'm not saying they are all improvements for want of a better word , but you only find out by playing..👍 Every change or mod I've made has been for fun and to see what i think. .i don't think I've made one other than clutch which was necessary..🫣😳🤣 |

If you are not getting slack when taking up drive , especially 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd, not getting clonks etc , not getting orange dust showing from the adapter case weep hole then it’s likely all is still ok. Noting if you are not having the transfer box removed for any other reason you will be charged at least 2 additional hours labour to have a look at the shaft. For me I could “feel” a slight change when pulling away and going through the gears until I hit 4th and was doing the work myself so no labour charge. I’m glad I did as it looks like the shaft had come out the cup and only 25-30% was engaging with the cup, plus there was a fair bit of orange rust present so I replaced my adapter shaft. As for alignment as long as the mating faces are cleaned and the bolts and studs torqued in a good sequence to the correct amount all will be ok. Noting the alignment issue is more about poor manufacturing than fitting as far as I understand. |
