Iv'e just had a look on JLR classic and they don't do the wiper motor, so i went onto Rimmer brothers and i had a big shock, genuine wiper motor is around £300 and a aftermarket wiper motor is around the £100 mark, i know going genuine is the way to go, at this price, is it ? Clayton.

I was in exactly the same position not so long ago. Original motor stopped working (though as I get older…. I can’t remember what the symptoms were!)
Although I’m increasingly going for genuine these days if it’s sensible, I know I didn’t pay £300 for the replacement so I’m assuming I went for non-genuine. Been on a couple of years I think, with no issues. I kept the old one and took it apart. Though I don’t really know much about these things, it looked like a new set of brushes might have been all that was needed, so I’ve kept it on the shelf and will maybe look again if the need arises. The genuine vs aftermarket is always a difficult question, though for me personally £100 vs £300 would probably swing it! (Edit - not trying to teach Clayton to suck eggs… but I assume you’ve checked the motor itself and it’s not anything like seized wiper boxes, relays, fuses etc?) All genuine 'Lucas' parts, inc switch gear etc are very expensive now
No wonder Britpart keep going If the job is a pig, to save doing it twice I would normally tend to go for genuine but I'm wary now of paying for a green oval on the box only to find the contents are indistinguishable from pattern parts. Anyone here have any experience of the cheaper option? |

Definitely worth stripping the motor before buying new. They’re not complicated things, and as above a new brush set might be all it needs.

Thinking outside the box, isnt the defender just leyland parts bin technology? Its a common wiper motor fitted to other cars, like the mini column switches and mini interior door handles. The wiper motor in my mini looks identical, and minispares sell one made by the original manufacturer for £49.80inc vat, you just have to put your gear in from the old one. 1953 80"

when you put the gear in make sure its the right way or you end up with lhd wipers. also some new motors need changing.

Lucas is pretty decent normally, often LR Genuine anyway.
Just fresh grease and everything lubed up can make a heck of a difference, the wheel boxes and rack can as good as seize up on its own. On mine the Motor was the only thing I didn’t replace, but when everything else was done it was like new so was causing the motor to labour w lot being all gummed up, plus noise as well. In good working order, wipers should be relatively quiet. In summer, I now use the wipers occasionally with washers every now and then, even at the expense of a little washer fluid. As in long spells in summer the wipers don’t get used, and this is when the grease gums up, thickens and drys, typically, then heavy rain after a long period of use and the wipers fail. Sod’s Law dictates that might be in autumn too, and that might, be MOT time coming up, which can then be various problems rolled into one, plus raining as well when wanting to fix it. 
So if possible, best to tackle that job in good weather when convenient, but of course that isn’t always possible or as predictable as that. In my experience Lucas these days is repackaged cheap tat from India and China and by no stretch of the imagination would I ever call it "quality".

Thank you to all the reply's
So to update this... I was going to buy a genuine one but they were not in stock, so i got an aftermarket one, i had to change over the gearing, cleaning and putting new grease in, i then installed it in Millie, it didn't work at first found out it was the fuse which had blown, but someone had put a 10A in where it should have been a 15A, i have put the correct one in there now, it all works
Q. the driver's side wiper arm doesn't go all the way over to the windscreen rubber and the passenger side doesn't go to the middle, is this because it's new or have i not installed the gearing in the right position ? TIA. Clayton. 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up. Keeper. |

I'd take the wiper arms off ,switch the wipers on and allow to cycle a couple of times ,switch wipers off replace wiper arms in parked positions, switch wipers on and see if they sweep correctly.

Sorry to jump on this but I’m having wiper issues. My wipers aren’t moving all the way to clear I front of the driver. I’ve changed the wheels and the wipers are set in the right position just don’t get much of a swoosh.
