Incidentally, there are significant factors influencing consumption:

Speed
KAT removal
Viscous fan removal
Moderate mapping
Oil temperature
Diesel quality


Removing the viscous fan saves me from the stand 10% fuel (!). I only need the fan in summer for long, strenuous journeys, otherwise I drive 90% of the year without it. The problem is that the fan never decouples completely due to its design.

The removal of the cat immediately produces more torque due to a faster spooling turbo, which can be used to save fuel, the same effect is produced by (moderate) mapping.

Oil temperatures rarely even reach 80°C when travelling overland on a standard Puma. This is bad for the water and fuel in the oil and for fuel consumption. Covering the radiator helps to raise the oil temperature to a higher level more quickly. It's amazing that I can leave the radiator completely covered and only reach oil temperatures of 85°C when travelling overland and the outside temperature is around 10°C. On a motorway journey I would see 95°C at a constant 110km/h. The cooling system is generously dimensioned and certainly helpful in the desert. For Central Europe, it's not so good.

I fill up with a premium diesel with a guaranteed minimum cetane number of 58+. The engine runs audibly quieter and more economically. I don't know whether the extra price is justified, but the fuel tends to burn cleaner and there are positive side effects.

And yes, my viscous fan works as intended and my thermostat is also in order. The only difference is that I don't use approved oil for various reasons.

Surprised to read about oil temperature. I can only refer to values I got via ODB2, however after the warm-up I see engine/water temp 88C and Oil somewhere between 88-93. Then reaching 100 and more under heavy load. Outside temperatures between 0-10C. Factory setup, no mods to radiator, fan etc.
So maybe the different oil you are using really make the difference here.

Interesting, you're referring to a 2.2 litre? I measure directly in the oil sump. I think measures were taken for the 2.2 litre to raise the oil temperature because of the DPF.

Just add my experience, with a 2.2tdci..
If I'm on a good run not just pottering about town etc then once up to temp my coolant is usually hovering a few degrees either side of 93 deg and the average oil temp under a steady load would be around 104 deg C..
Those are ball park figures which vary depending on load etc

Yes, I have also noticed this for the 2.2-litre engines. As you know, there is no sensor for the oil temperature in the earlier Puma and as there is usually no thermostat in the oil cooler, the oil temperature is within the range of the coolant temperature. I can actively influence my oil temperature through the heater.
I have also considered installing the oil cooler thermostat, but I have a preheater and the cooling water is then naturally warmer than the oil and heats up the oil faster than it would with an oil thermostat.

Yes.. My oil and coolant temp would be similar if I'm just pottering about, but under longer drives and more sustained loading there is a 10/12 degree difference most of the time..
I can't remember seeing my coolant above 99 deg c and my oil never above about 108 if I remember correctly.. Not sure if the warmer weather will change any of that.. I'll see👍

Btw, with my modifications I achieve just about 30 mpg, calculated with 4.546 l/gal and 1.609344 km/mls. The truck has 300kkm/187kmls soon.

I'm happy with that and I don't drive too slow Wink It's a wonderful vehicle that doesn't "patronise" the driver

I have often thought about removing the viscous fan and replacing it with an electric one controlled by a thermostat. I'm sure it would improve efficiency and have the added advantage of being able to temporarily disable it when wading.
