Cheers. Looks like the door mounting plate sticks out quite a bit, I think the top angle section will clash with the door card 1999 Defender TD5 110

My solution was very similar to the one pictured on page 4 of this post:

My difference was that I fabricated a bracket that bolts in the original 2 holes in the tub (saves drilling the tub), and was such that it protects the gas spring in case heavy stuff moves in the back of the landy. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

I know it’s aesthetically not to everyone’s taste, but I have the Naka version that’s mounted to the top of the door frame. It’s been fitted for years without any issues Thumbs Up

Vastly improved both opening and closing the door and can’t imagine life without it now Laughing

I’ve been looking at this one

It’s got a slow stop. I like the idea that I don’t have to dismantle loads of other stuff to fit it… “a committee is a group of people who individually can do nothing, but as a group decide nothing can be done.”

I have ordered a strut from Bison. This fits on the bottom of the door frame and looked less bulky than others. A review to follow once installed. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Hi - I’ve just purchased one of these top mounted gas struts. The top 2 grab handles above the rear door need to be removed - anyone know what type of bolts/screws are under the plastic clips?
Incidentally, LR Centre sell the same version at £35.00 delivered.

The grab handles are held on by large ish cross head self tappers (on mine anyway).

Keep them loose until the adjustment is complete.

I think the struts may differ between the various offerings in terms of their force.

Mine has been excellent over many years of use.

I have the mud stuff kit and I don’t like it. It would throw the door open if you don’t stop it. Can these be adjusted at all? Also takes too much effort to close. Confused Andy

The gas springs are extremely common to buy aftermarket in all shapes and sizes (and quality). It wil need a bit of measuring and searching but you should be able to find a replacement with less spring pressure and more dampening. They just clip in so no need to mess with the doorcard or brackets.

I’ve got the Mud one and it doesn’t do that. It slows just before it gets to full extension. It can take quite a bit of effort to overcome the strut to close the door when parked up hill though. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

I have never actually let it fully open on its own, always feels like it will damage something! Must try it this morning to double check but a video to compare would be great. Andy
