That first paragraph is sickening in its hypocrisy. "Ongoing quality assessments and improvements" my arse! They are only doing this because they will end up in court if they don't. Shocking, shameful, and exactly what we have come to expect. Very sad times.

Do the brackets actually reinforce the axle case as they state, preventing it shearing at the weld ? or do the brackets just stop the sheared bit of the axle plus swivel, hub, wheel etc totally collapsing and flying off when it does ?

I’m sure it’s the latter, in which case this is a child like cynical attempt to word the solution as a rectification of the cause !

The brackets are designed to retain the failed part rather than to prevent it failing in the first place, although it is possible that they may marginally reduce the likelihood of the failure occurring. In the even of the weld failing, the brackets will retain the hub assembly in place and allow the vehicle to be controlled normally, probably to the extent that the driver will be unaware of the failure. It is almost certain that there will be a tell-tale oil leak, and the bracket is designed so that this will be visible.

I have not heard of a vehicle with the brackets fitted subsequently failing, although there seems to be no reason why it can't. I do also wonder what JLR's reaction would be if you did find yourself in this situation, I don't see that they would have much choice but to replace the axle. The original recall did replace axles which had cracked, and fitted brackets to those which had no visible defect.

At one time it had become very hard to obtain the brackets, I think the limited supply had dried up. I presume that JLR must have had a further batch made.

NO, they do not reinforce the axle.
If you have the brackets, and you feel a wobble in the steering, do not hit the brakes, as they too will fail - keep in mind that when the axle fail, the brackets need to take the weight, plus whichever wheel trying to part with the vehicle due to a huge toe out. So my 110 goes in next week for the necessary bracket fix. I am going to ask the dealer to inspect the axle case and certify that it's ok. (Crack free) What else should we be pushing for during this recall visit? If we are investing time to get this thing sorted, what else should we be pushing the dealer to do/advise or recommend?

For those who have not received the letter (like me), I went onto https://osh.landrover.com/ and entered my VIN number. There it popped up the Outstanding Recalls - ❗ Safety recall - N706 - FRONT AXLE REINFORCEMENT BRACKET. Please contact your local authorised repairer.

I have called my authorised repairer, and they are ordering the brackets and I am booked for 1 month from now. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Was it under the “outstanding alerts” section on the main page ?

I just looked up my vin and there is nothing about a recall for my 2013 2.2. I know I’m out of the vin range by 4 days but I really don’t think JLR have sufficiently accurate records to be accurate “to the day” when they stopped fitting faulty axles .

So what’s involved in fitting the brackets as I may just buy and fit myself.

Never installed brackets myself, but installing the brackets is very simple. Just remove the nuts that bolt the axle to the radius arms, slide in the brackets, and re do the nuts to the correct torque. Does not even need to lift a wheel off the ground. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Somehow I have those brackets in a shelf. Mine it is an early Puma so the thing friction welded. Anyway, those brackets are extremely light. Not sure what they are made off. Puma 110" SW

Thanks Dinnu, I was wondering if I needed longer bolts , or if anything needed removing to get the bolts out. If not seems an easy to fit solution if I get the brackets and fit myself, just in case my axle casing is defective even if outside the JLR recall

The bolts do not need to be removed, although it is not a bad idea to pull them out one at a time and apply some anti seize. It is also recommended to use new nuts (M16x1.5). Given that the brackets have a counterbore, a flanged nut might not fit anymore. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing
