Ok, so I’ve been chasing a rattling type sound for a while now. Not sure how it comes across on your speakers etc, but it’s a metallic type tapping/rattling.
https://youtube.com/shorts/VFxQRVBn2O0?feature=share It goes away the second you remove the belt, so started throwing money at the ancillaries. Poorly fitted cheap alternator replaced with new Denso unit. New belt tensioner. Noise remained. Found a bit of play in the water pump and power steering pump, both original to the best of my knowledge so decided to replace both with new OEM units. Noise remains. I’m stumped. Only thing left is crank damper, but with a bar on that it doesn’t have excessive play, no squeaks on shut down, and this noise goes away as the engine warms up. So I turn to you guys for suggestions…. 2003 Defender 90 Td5 CSW Belize Green - "Betty" 1958 Series IIA 109 Station Wagon - "Randolph" - Awaiting Restoration 2019 Jeep Wrangler JL Rubicon - SOLD 2006 Volvo V70 D5 - Ocean Race Edition, SOLD 2003 VW Passat Estate 1.9TDI - SOLD 2008 BMW 320D M Sport Estate - SOLD 2001 Defender 90 Td5 Hard Top - SOLD |

After some pondering I’ve concluded it HAS to be the crank damper.
Will pull the old one off and take a look today. 2003 Defender 90 Td5 CSW Belize Green - "Betty" 1958 Series IIA 109 Station Wagon - "Randolph" - Awaiting Restoration 2019 Jeep Wrangler JL Rubicon - SOLD 2006 Volvo V70 D5 - Ocean Race Edition, SOLD 2003 VW Passat Estate 1.9TDI - SOLD 2008 BMW 320D M Sport Estate - SOLD 2001 Defender 90 Td5 Hard Top - SOLD |

YEs that sounds like the harmonic can damper. When it gets that bad it is because the rubber damping material has parted company with the metal allowing the two halves of the damper to clack against each other.
It is not a bad job, but you do need a BIG torque wrench and lever to get the bolt off and back on again. There is a good How To on Discovery 2's website http://www.discovery2.co.uk/CrankPulley.html |

Success it was the crank damper.
Getting it off was relatively easy actually, used the timing pin to lock the engine at the flywheel, and with a breaker bar it came off fairly easy, I suspect it wasn't torqued up all the way. 2003 Defender 90 Td5 CSW Belize Green - "Betty" 1958 Series IIA 109 Station Wagon - "Randolph" - Awaiting Restoration 2019 Jeep Wrangler JL Rubicon - SOLD 2006 Volvo V70 D5 - Ocean Race Edition, SOLD 2003 VW Passat Estate 1.9TDI - SOLD 2008 BMW 320D M Sport Estate - SOLD 2001 Defender 90 Td5 Hard Top - SOLD |

investing in the correct locking tool for the engine, can make life that much easier. when i did the head gasket on the Kseries engine, Locking it at the flywheel made a massive difference in helping me undo the crank pully. I know its the extra cost and another step to lock the engine, but its worth it to help things out Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back Success is 90% Inspiration and 4 minutes Preparation # you can make it! |

i owned a rover metro, and somethings you were on your own, like the suspension. So i was my own support. me and my dad have learned a lot from the rover metro days, we now get the proper tools in, and replacement bolts a long with the parts. We have had simple jobs turn into a right nightmare! But we have had jobs that should have been a nightmare work out like a dream. ( fuel pump on mine, was supposed to have been a pain, but as soon as the seals etc were settled. We were laughing. ( i bought the proper locking tool for that too) Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back
