Td5 misfire
Hi my 2004 td5 has started with a cold start misfire with white smoke if you start it and let it tick over its fine or give it lots of throttle its fine is seen to be just above tick over to about 2000 rpm have change the injector loom, glow plugs and cleaned all oil from the red plug, also changed the injector seals to original, the only fault codes that come up are dtc vehicle speed outside bounds for cruise (were fitted) active and 160 can error fault active. Any help on were to look next would be appreciated.

Ok so white smoke at startup in my TD5 was the head gasket. It was an incredibly subtle when the gasket was inspected but there was a minor track between the cylinder and oil gallery.

What does the white smoke smell like? Oily?

My TD5 smelt pretty bad, but cleared up as the engine got to temperature. It only happened on a cold start after sitting for a hours.

Ok. sorry for the potentially bad news. Rolling Eyes

I think I had white smoke some time ago. I took out the EGR valve and replaced it with a regular ol' straight piece. You can find kits online. Might do the trick for ya. 2003 90 TD5 Hardtop

its not the crank senor then, it might be worth checking the fuel pump relay to see how that is connection wise. I replaced mine for the sake for a £10, when i was having the same trouble. Thumbs Up
Also banging in some decent Diesel injector treatment wont hurt either, Doing the cheap hits 1st, Thumbs Up Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

Have now swapped the relays with good ones from a other defender, and added some diesel treatment, when the codes are read it's a can fault that comes up

Ignore the CAN fault. There’s no CAN network in it. What tool are you using? Can you look at cylinder balance? How did you set the injectors up? Does it only misfire at start after sitting? Any diesel in the oil? Loosing any coolant? What fuel map is on it?

using a Launch CRP919X, cylinder balance is fine, set the injectors up screwed all the way down and back one turn, only misfires on a cold start up or if its been sitting for about a couple of hours only from about just above tick over to about 2000rpm whitish grey like unburned fuel occasionally it will start with no problems at all, some times it takes a few turn to start but mostly it starts straight up. no diesel in the oil, not losing any coolant and its a standard map.
