Mmmm, I can see now what it looks like. To explain, my Def has developed a fault (to put it mildly) in or around the transfer box/Gear box, whilst on hols in Spain. They have sent me an estimate for the works and apparently stated that this item needs to be replaced. (platina de accionamiento). I can only assume they have made a mistake as I am unsure why this part would have any bearing on not being able to get into gear after a loud clunk and some griding. Also, in spain they seem to cost 122€ Shocked

Any thoughts on what they might have confused it with? Monsieur Le Grenadier

platina de accionamiento is "drive plate" so may be not necessarily the drive flange pictured.

Have you got a part number from them?  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

LR030054 that should be (LR's service system puts an extra L in, and people think LRO from the magazine)

Anyway, gives:

Transfer box output flange

£100+VAT full UK retail price, or blue box pattern part around £50+VAT

But might be the dreaded failure Sad http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic59735.html  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Based on noise and how it failed (one hour after disembarking the ferry, but fortunately actually 50m from the dealer) I did wonder if this was the issue. Do Ashcroft do an uprated version or is the stock version fine if properly lubed? Embarassed Monsieur Le Grenadier

Thanks for the links. If they do confirm it's the problem I think I'll head down Ashcroft route. I wonder if anyone has had the newly designed MT82 LR kit installed? Was this done for the last few releases or indepedently because of the continuing problems?

Also, the DC has done 62k (miles) would it be worth doing the clutch at the same time? Monsieur Le Grenadier

I don't think there is anything "new" about that kit and LR hasn't changed the design of the coupling at all during the Puma production run. The only change was the inclusion of the unidentified pàste as lubricant (which is I think in fact Weicon anti-seize paste).

At that mileage I would definitely plan to change the clutch since the typical life expectancy of even the latest Puma clutches is still only 50k to 75k miles before the springs start to take on a permanent set.

What do you mean by not being able to get it into gear?

You can't actually select gears, or you can select them, but you have no drive.

If you can't actually select gears with the engine running, then it's likely the clutch has jammed which could be described as a 'drive plate'.

If you go here, you can download the Haynes Technical Dictionaries in a range of languages.
