2010 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 XS CSW Orkney Grey

Rear work lamp

I am thinking of putting a rear lamp on the back above the door and simply wiring it into the reversing lamp. I have window tints so can't see much in the dark when reversing at the minute. Would this wiring idea work? With the ignition on I can pop into reverse to use as normal lamp too.

Also, any recommendations for a light, LED maybe? Thanks.

Basically it needs to be on a separate illuminating switch to be legal. Whichever way you do it however it's best practice to use a relay.

Many people wire them in through a three way switch so you have

Auto (on with reverse)
Off
On (manual)

If going led then a relay isn't needed

If I understand you right, you're talking about having your work light switched on/off when the vehicle is put in/out of reverse gear?

I think that would be quite restrictive and maybe a bit impractical. Better to find an alternative power source and allow it to be switched independently.

I'll be fitting a scenelight shortly I think, and I'll try and gave that switched at the light.

I currently have one switched from the front dash, but I ran power up the A pillar and along the side of the roof (I had the headlining out at the time anyway).

I've set mine up to be operated by a switch on the steering column cowl, so it's easy to reach should I need it whilst reversing. Was easy enough to feed the wires up the a pillar and tuck behind the trims to get to the back door.

I wired mine with two switches, uno on the cubby box and the second on the rear, closer to the Left loudspeaker.

Below you can see the electrical diagram.

With the cubby box switches (ON-OFF.ON) you can select:
1. Rear lamp ON
2. Rear lamp OFF
3. Rear lamp ON with reverse
