Middle Lane Roadhogs
I'm sure this has been voiced before, but, just travelled back from London to the Fylde Coast M40 , M42 , M6 and M55. The amount of thoughtless Censored driving in the middle lane at anything from 55 to 65 mph was staggering, it is one thing that really bugs me about Motorway driving. Unfortunately (and I'm not a sexist person at all) most of these middle lane hoggers were young women and one I noticed was blatantly texting as she drove with her eyes down and not looking ahead. The sooner that driving lessons include Motorway driving with the correct use of lane discipline the better.

Strange that this subject has raised it head again, I was talking to a young relative who has just started learning to drive and I thought that I would test them with some questions one of which was "in what lane on a motor way should you drive" the reply was "the middle or outside lane " so I asked why not the nearside lane the reply was shot back at me that this was for H.G.V.'S and caravans only and things had changed since I learnt to drive , I learnt in 1968. I asked them to explain what vehicles could use what lanes . The reply was nearside H.G.V.'S and Caravans only, which could use the middle lane provided no cars were using that lane but only for overtaking purposes but could not remain in the lane, middle lane for cars to travel at low speeds and the outside lane for faster driving. I thought that they had misinterpreted the written word but they insisted that the driving instructor had told her this so I asked a neighbour to check with their grandchild who is learning with the same driving school but in another part of the country and they got the same reply.

It would seem that a national driving school have rewritten the high way code and Road Traffic Act. Don't make old people mad.

I also find this incredibly frustrating, clear for miles ahead but still they just sit there!

However, on a recent speed awareness course Whistle they said there is no fast and slow lane or over taking lane just lane 1, 2 and 3. Did I miss something, is it now OK to use any lane and under take if necessary?

Don't get me started on people not using indicators or drivers thinking if they have DRLs on the front they don't need any lights on the rear at all, even in the worst driving conditions! Banging Head James

Oh DRL'S one of the worst E.U. regulations just to fit in with Volvo if memory is correct. At least the Volvo's had rear lights as well as front. I cannot see the point of driving in DAY LIGHT with the front lights on.

I was in Plymouth last week and it was obvious that indicating is only an option in that area. Don't make old people mad.

With a reasonably clear road and a centre lane hog I ALWAYS undertake them. Then pull into the middle lane briefly in front of them and flash my nearside indicators, before getting into lane 1.

Not sure if its illegal or not!

Unfortunately your undertaking is illegal, you will receive points as it is inherently dangerous. Don't get me wrong I can't stand the middle lane hogs, I regularly tow a trailer on the motorway ergo I cannot use lane 3, so can be stuck behind someone doing 55 for miles. The only sign I recall that reminds us of our Lane discipline is on the northbound beginning of the M1.. interesting ref the driving instructors.

After 4 months working in Turkmenistan I cant wait to get back to NZ's Censored driving (which is much the same as what you discus in this thread).

It's next-level crazy here, and my colleagues tell me Baku and Sochi were worse (!) Shocked Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

Undertaking is illegal, however, so is middle lane hogging I believe.
I'm pretty sure of that, as it constitutes as impeding traffic. Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧
