Looks like another problem has popped up two days ago. When your pushing over 50 MPH, there is a squealing noise. when your in 3rd gear onwards. Only come on the last two days, Sounds like a belt is stiff or something. I had a rev right up to the limiter and all she does is roar as normal, so what ever it is, must be something that is effected over a certain speed, As I type this, I am thinking has a Wheel bearing on the verge of going west. I have had a feel on the hubs and they are not warm, I have even had a feel on how tight the belt is too and that's like a drum.
Any ideas on what the hell it could be? Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

I am thinking that too, but the alternator looks like its about 2 years old or so, my dad thinks it could be the power assisted steering belt, might need a little tweak, not sure if the 300 is the same as the 200. He says it is.
I thought is it the turbo, but the laugh is it only does it when you are driving but not when its stationary. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

any one of the ancillary pulleys, water, tensioner, fan might have dodgy bearings causing them to cease a bit at speed, the belt would then screech over them instead of running nice and smooth. i would whip off ancillary belt and check all pulleys! My 109 thread

I will have a look at that, I think I might get the full blown kit for the aux belt, and replace those. Also see about getting the timing belt done too, Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

Turbo won't kick in properly with the vehicle stationary, it needs the engine working hard to spin it up. Would be worth taking the intake hose off and having a look at the impeller to check the play in it.

300Tdi belt setup is completely different to 200Tdi, being a single poly-v belt rather than several standard belts.

A screeching could also be a leaking air hose or intercooler, when pressurised by the turbo under load.

I would think its the alternator as mine made that noise, i'm on my 3rd one now Rolling Eyes just dont make like they use to Evil or Very Mad
The other thing to check is the belt as mine made that squealing coming back from having a service, they didn't put a new belt on as it was in very good condition so they put it back on,so i went back to them and they put a new belt on and the squealing was no more Wink 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up. Not wrong there about alternators not lasting the distance now, My dad had to replace one that only lasted just two years. I have had to replace 3 on a rover metro, which is a bit of a Censored of a job to do!
It looks like its had a replacement one though some point last year.

What are the AUX belts like to do on these? the timing belt side i am Censored scared of doing that! Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back
