diff lock has been on for god knows how long. what damage?
I bought a td5 landy from a dealer about 10 days ago. Today I noticed a problem and took it into a garage who told me they think the diff lock is on (with no light on and the lever is not doing anything)but will investigate futher. They chocked the front wheels and jacked it and the rear wheel turned in reverse and then locked with a bit of play

If it is on, what damage might this have done to the truck

Did you notice any of the wheel scrubbing? I've seen a transfer box destroyed internally and the scrubbing of the wheels while driving was very noticeable when the diff kept locking/unlocking itself as all the bits churned around inside. Tom

Did you find that it was almost impossible to steer on the road? if not (ie the steering was failry normal) then the difflock was NOT engaged.

In addition to extremely difficulty steering, you will generally suffer accelerated tyre wear, accelerated wear in the rest of the drive train, and possible halfshaft breakage.

It is however almost impossible to have the centre diff locked on a hard surface and NOT notice it. I think it is very unlikely that your diff has been locked, and the garage is talking cobblers!

Just on my way back from the garage in a taxi. They had the car off the floor. When they turned one wheel and held the other on the same axle the wheels on the other axle turned. It was scrubbing when turning slow am the steering was very heavy. I thought it was down to the big aftermarket tyres.

They showed me what they found and that the transfer box is seized or jammed. As the linkages move freely.

I'd be returning back to the original dealer before time gets on too far

OK, I take back my last paragraph! Embarassed

It sounds as though your transfer box has a serious fault and your centre diff is locked. Hopefully the dealer will sort it for you free of charge since clearly the vehicle was not of merchantable quality when they sold it to you.

Yeah fair play to the dealer. (I'm not going to name them for the time being)
A phone call today and they said it would just be the selector or something else out of adjustment and the garage it was in now was just trying to scare me.

After telling them what the other garage had told me and telling me not to drive it they sent a low loader the 80 odd miles to collect it for repair and have told me they have a transfer box they can fit if required.

That seems to be a reasonable response, provided that it is done at no cost to you.

Good news. The garage I bought it from have been on the phone
Something just inside the top of the case was worn and seized which allowed it to slip into diff lock.
It's now been replaced and is as right as rain!
