285 or 265
285 or 265 65 18 tyres

Bfg all terrains
Which size to have ?
Who's cheapest Iv found them on 4x4tyres at 175 and 185 for the 265 65 18
Save 50 and go for the wider ones or just go for the 265s ?

Is there anywhere else to consider with a better price ?

Try tyreleader.co.uk. Cheapest place I could find BFG km2s when I bought my set. Free delivery and they arrived (from Germany) within 3 days. I think a few others on here have used them too. Tom

Fit either dirt defenders or I think it was Gwynn Lewis extenders as I got sick of the constant mud

I also recommend the Gwynn Lewis kit to keep the outriggers away from constant road spray

I've always regretted going with 285s. Until I fitted dirt defenders the muck up the doors was a nightmare. Much better now, but I think 265s would fit in the arches better. 2008 Defender 110 XS SW - M57N2 / 6HP28X

Cheers guys still undecided as I know from experience that 285s dong like mud that much ?

I've run rings round a D4 on wide ATs with a Defender on 7.50 Michelin XPCs (the predecessor to the Latitude).

He did then have to point out his heated seats and steering wheel though Very Happy

255x85xR16

255s because:
Not too wide, but still an improvement on the standard 235.
1.7mm more clearance.

R16 because:
Comfort
If reduced pressure: wider footprint (sand etc), so best of both worlds.


I find 285s a bit too wide and 265s don't have the extre clearance.
(I did not do the calculations for 65xR18s, so may be wrong here, but again R18 = less comfort, harder ride)

I have to admit that I am probably going to change from 285/75x16 KM2s to 255/85x16 KM2s because the 285s are just that bit too wide!

I have actually taken the 285s off for the winter and reverted to 7.50s (Michelin XZL) in case of snow - and we at last had some this morning - and the narrower tyres are much better at cutting through to the tarmac.

I haven't finally made my mind up, but there may well be a set of four part-worn and one completely unused 285/75x16 BFG KM2s coming up for sale if anyone is after a set.

285 for the 'look' (and stability for 'fast' road use) but if you're using Offroad the 255 Thumbs Up

Did the calculation:

285x65R18 are 6mm lower then 285x75R16, so 3mm less clearence (ignorable).
265x65R18 are 2mm lower then 265x75R16, so 1mm less clearence (ignorable).

285s are between 828 and 834 mm high
265s are between 802 and 803 mm high
255s are 840 mm high
235s are 805 mm high, so 265s are actually lower then 235x85R16 Shocked Did not expect that! Of course, because they are wider, after 5000kms the reverse is probably true (slower wear).

My personal conclusion is still the same though: 255x85R16

I personally would advice to have a set for road use (235s or 265s) and a set for offroad/greenlaning (255s).

I find the 255s to be a bit more heavy on the road, making the car less nimble. The wider, the heavier. It is also a shame to wear them on the road and not have enough thread when you actually need it. I would also go for a road tyre (AT) for that reason. You also don't need the extra clearence either on the road.

Offroad I'd always go for 255x85R16. Bought a set of modulars just for that purpose. The cost is justified as the offroads cost more and will last longer that way. I do 20k-25k per year, so it makes sense to me as after 25k offroad tyres would have lost 3 to 4 mm of thread which make quite a difference off road. I do about 1k per year off road and maybe 2k-5k on road with them since I got the sets seperated, so they'll last quite some time longer.

Swapping takes 30 minutes and as after off roading it's easier to clean with the wheels off anyway you should only count the put-on time. It also makes you check your brake pads in time.
