I cannot be 100% sure but it was rumoured ages ago on the forum that Mammoth made the OEM chequerplate. What I can confirm is that it is top quality and matches the OEM stuff exactly. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

I think you will find that Breed Group of Luton is the genuine manufacturer of OEM NAS step and chequer plate for Land Rover. Not a rumour either Razz Have a look at their website

Would you want to buy from them?
The side steps and rear NAS step seem to rust within days of manufacture - maybe that's part of the specification from Land Rover. Laughing http://defender90xs.blogspot.co.uk/

Going to the manufacturer or fabricator direct can (if they sell to the public) be considerably cheaper than going to a retailer who has overheads obviously! Yes I would buy from them. Certain items associated with Land Rover are synonamous with rotting out we all know that. I have no experience with the rear NAS step but my sidesteps are just beginning to show signs of needing perhaps a strip, dip and repowdercoating in the next year or so, 6 years use in my book ain't that bad and it appears to be stonechips that have perhaps caused the issue not inferior quality or finish? My first set of sidesteps were swapped out under warranty but the subsequent set have been ok. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Well it could be if you can contact them !!!
The website contact No. doesn't seem to work and looking up the Breed Group just brings up the same info.
Mammoth chequer plate is available through suppliers and they do look good quality too with decent fixings and foam gasket but after looking at a few makes i'm getting a price for the chequer plate to be fitted from new as i really couldn't bear to slip with the old Black + Decker !!
The rear step isn't so bad as i'll treat it before fitting, and in fact the first thing i'm getting done to it once delivered
is to have the vehicle waxoiled or Dimitroled as hopefully i'll be keeping it for a while.

mark_d is correct. Take this into account if you go down this route. My 90 came with these fitted.
'Good' products, let down by short sighted, cost cutting finishing. The metal plate under the rubber tread on the NAS rear step is also too thin and so if rust gets hold (which it will) this element will melt before your eyes (well mine lasted 18 months) and so was replaced with a proper bit of metal, and along with the side steps, are now receiving a tough epoxy coat of paint, thicker than the few microns they first received before being sent out into the world.

Personally I would repaint them from new, and send the OEM source a note that they must try harder as their products are letting them down Sad

Share a good experience, and broadcast a bad one...as they say... SKIP

All the products on breed group site are manufactured by a company in Leighton buzzard beds , don't know the name I'm afraid they are based on the old chassis development site , maybe there is someone more local to them can enlighten. I've seen said products being collected by land rover arctics on a regular basis.

Off Topic As to sidesteps, the standard ones from LR do rust, yes, I noticed that on many Defenders.
But the sidesteps for the SVX, which are a different Land Rover product, do not rust at all. Not mine, not any other that I have seen sofar. Presume it just is a better product, maybe from a different subcontractor too. No doubt these must be available from the Land Rover dealer, so might work for some of us here.
I don't know about the version for the ICE limited series, I know it is the same model sidesteps as on the SVX, but painted black instead of grey. Someone with an ICE may be able to confirm what I say here. Thumbs Up You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

When I bought my last Defender I picked up 'Genuine Parts' black chequer plate wing-tops, sills and rear corners from Breed (and a NAS rear step). 7 years ago and as noted the company seems to have disappeared in the mean time.

However, the LR stuff is not the same as Mammouth. The genuine gear is anodised black and unchanged after 7 years outdoors. Mammouth's is powder coated and I doubt it is as durable.

Does anyone know if there is an alternative black anodised product to the genuine stuff? Cheers, Guy.
