Snapped Dipstick

Good morning everyone, hope yours is going better than mine....

I planned to check oil and lub's, tires etc this morning but as I went to check the oil i felf some resistance on the dipstick. I was pulling at a slight angle with a rag around the dipstick when I felt it snap. I'm 80% sure I heard some metal fall outside the dipstick tube/ engine. Ive spent an hour trying to find it but to no avail. The part that has snapped is the flat metal part at the bottom of the wire, the part with the measurements on.

Ive opted not to start the engine until i found the missing part, but i cant find it. Possibly, if i started it the missing part would drop out of somewhere. What really worries me is if the end has gone back down the tube and into the sump.
1, is it likely to damage the engine if i drove it?
2, is it likely to fall out if I drain the oil? I have no magnet.

Any advice would be appreciated........

Well, i've drained the oil in the hope it would be stuck to the magnetic sump plug. My sump plug, is definitely NOT magnetic, and there was nothing in the oil.

Looked all over the engine bay but no sign of the tip. Sadly ive not the tools to take the sump off, thoroughly

ed off .

Did you run something down the tube to ensure it wasn't stuck in there? Chances are it'll be stuck in the sump and the oil flow wasn't strong enough to shift it.

Three choices really.....

Invest or borrow the tooling to do the job below....

Phone a friend....

Or.....

Arrange for a dealer/independant to collect and get them to sort it.

The latter of course will cost you significantly more than the tools to do it.

UK is a big place. Post whereabouts you are and a fellow forum member may offer to assist?

Im in the Catterick area, it was more I dont have any sealant to refit the sump. A truck mechanic over the road said 'not to worry, see's it on trucks alot'. If it was a work vehicle I wouldn't be too worried, but its my pride and joy and my cash. If I had a second car or I was in a city I could take the sump off slow time, but its our daily drive.

I was surprised the sump plug isn't magnetic though. Think I'll replace that.

if your bit of broken dipstick is still in the sump

Don't know what your engine is but maybe worth a try

One way to remove is find a strong magnet and stick it to bottom of sump then slide magnet towards sump plug hole and if your lucky it would drag the part close to the hole then with a bit of mucking about you may get the bit out

could also work if its a ally sump ,but you will have to hold it up to the sump

Thanks Munch90, just ordered a strong magnet and will give it a bash.
K9F, i can put the remainder of the dipstick down with no resistance, so if it did stay in it went down the tube to the sump. Had a drive today and will drain the oil again, see if it turns up.

You could always also get a magnetised old screwdriver. Or magnetise one, bend it almost to 90degrees and use that to fish about through the drain plug.

Hi Steve,
Just been doing that tonight, i also pushed a metal rod down the tube to push it into the sump. To be safe, the sump is coming off and I'll do a complete oil/filter change while I'm there.

I've still got the feeling the bloody thing is hiding in the engine bay, or fell out on the road. Called round a few garages before I drove to ask if it was a danger to the engine, all seemed to say it 'shouldn't' do any damage.

Excuse to buy more tools and get under the wagon though. Next investment is some ramps

Update: Sump off today and the offending part was in the sump, in one piece. There is gauze fitted to the pipe/pump intake so it seems it couldnt go any further.

New dipstick fitted, will be more careful in future.
