Switzerland 2009 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 SVX Station Wagon Santorini Black
Rust around a rivnut - what to do?
I have noticed this already a couple of years ago, but it is getting worse now. Bit of rust has developed around one of the painted rivnuts in the panel at the left of the rear door.
How do I solve this? Is this something that my dealer's bodyshop can take care of ? (they are pretty good) Can this be solved without having to drill the rivnut out?

You can clean the rust off with this:

and then touch up the paint.

Thanks Joe, but doubt Bilthamber is available here. And to order it from their site means fairly prohibitive shipping costs to Switzerland, they would be a multiple of the product cost...
Other ideas/suggestions?

Hi, that's a pop or pot rivet not a riv nut, wipe a bit of rusteze or similar over it and touch up with the correct lr paint pen.

Can you get ACF50, Eric? If so, spray it liberally on the rivet and up underneath the full length of the capping(s). It appears that the capping undersides aren't painted, so the rust you're seeing is almost certainly indicative of more that's hidden. Darren

Eric, you can ask your pharmacist for some oxalic acid. Make a 10% solution and treat the rust with it. Flush with a lot of water and touch up with paint.
(if your pharamicist won't sell it to you, alternatively you can use teak cleaning solution - the main ingredient is oxalic acid).

This is safe for the paint and removes the rust and rust stains. We used this a lot on cars which had parked for several days in the close vicinity of railway stations and thus got a lot of rust stains from the overhead wires. Cheers, Vincent

To keep the water out of the gap between body and cappings, I treated the gap with black sealant.

Thanks all suggestions. First thing I will do is show it to the dealer. The truck is now 5 1/2 years old, so there still is the factory corrosion warranty in place until September, albeit I do know that this warranty in year 4 thru 6 is limited to "perforating rust" only.
What is the definition of perforating rust by the way? Think I can make a point that this here is not surface rust, but rust which possibly has started from inside that panel and now is creeping outside via that pop rivet.... So perforating maybe???? Still worth the effort to ask I think.

Vincent, I will try the dealer to take off the capping with that pop rivet to see if this can be called "perforating rust" which has started from the inside after water ingress....

#2 for the ACF50 approach, spray up under the cappings, run it behind the rear corner cappings and wipe it around the rivet repeat annually DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

spray under all cappings with waxoyl , also stops the rust creeping out where caps are welded

blow lots up under the caps and wipe off paint work
if you can get a proper air powered gun to do it

people who use acf50 seem to keep reapplying it
waxoyled twice in 7 years and as new
don't get me wrong I have got some acf50
but looking at some of the corrosion posts on forum on much later cars then mine , I've always used waxoyl or supertrol and mine ( luckily ) has no corrosion what so ever
ok it's no good if you want to paint over after ,but I prefer prevention rather then cure

Well, we will first see what my dealer says about it, hopefully they will cover it under the still valid "perforating rust" warranty. If LR warranty do not accept, I will ask them still a quote to take off the capping and sort the issue out.
If that quote would be crazy here in Geneva, then my truck will go in May back to a first class Swiss body shop near Basel for re-Dinitrolling, and eventually I will ask them to check this all out and take that capping off and repair, repaint. Those guys are first class I know, and possibly a bit more reasonably priced than here in Geneva wonderland.....
In the meantime I would try out this ACF-50 product on it then.
