...just when I thought it couldn't get any worse..... Shocked

Wayne don't take anything off, just drive the vehicle a couple of miles then feel the drum, if the shoes [not pads] are rubbing the drum will be hot and you are likely to be able to smell hot brake linings. Steve.

Shocked

The prop is now half off but snow has halted progress....might as well take apart and at least have a look inside drum as put it back together will keep you posted.

Hope you are all having a great break from the norm.

Thumbs Up

If you intend on striping the brakes to see if there is any binding, why not apply some chalk to the shoes rebuild. Drive and strip to re inspect. Any heavy witness marks would indicate a high spot ( along with excessive heat coming from the drum).

My self I would set the brakes according to the manual. Check for bind. Road test 10 to 15 miles, if the drums still cold. It`s fine no further action required.

If your really worried the quickest way to do it is, as we do at work on trucks and trailers. Inspect and set brakes correctly, ensure all pivots, actuators are ok. Road test, get the infra red thermometer out and read off all brakes / axles.
Dead quick and easy.

You can pick up a infra red thermometer for about 70 quid they have loads of uses... Excuse the spelling I`am better with spanners and wires.

Thank you.

Now done what I should have done a long time ago - new drum fitted and while setting it up against the original it would appear the original wasn't as round as it should have been Sad

Just need to get the rear prop on and check it all out. Will get it sorted in an hour or two once the children are in bed.

Steve......drove home last night without rear prop following fitting of new drum and transmission felt all slack (put it down to no rear prop)

Fitted rear prop last night and went for a drive this am and still slack (real struggle to a smooth gear change -high gears possible but difficult) ..... pulled onto island and it dropped into neutral on t.box.

I wonder if the linkage rod needs extending or shortening?

Anyhow after I can say things are mu he'd improved - the vibration at c 52 mph has gone for starters....will see how things go over the next few days.

take it the diff lock works ok , if you have drove it without rear prop ?

not that uncommon if you have moved t/box lever to jump out after , best to move lever drive few feet then try moving again same way

Just back from the lake district......

Not convinced all is good but that some improvements noted. The vibrating at c52mph I'm sure has gone.

There's a drunk sound from the rear but not a constant pitch it's a wo wo wo not a woooo if that makes sense?

The rear prop uj's seem ok but I do wonder if the prop isn't well balanced? Or if it's simply the rear diff or even the tyres (would be nice to get it quieter but it doesn't worry me).

The issue Steve mentioned rear the hi/lo and the inability to make a smooth gear change came back after 150 miles of motorway to the point where I felt like ditching the motor Sad ...

Unfortunately having the family with pulling over to check if the hand brake was hot or not wasn't really an option so I can't understand what might have caused it?

Also driving home for the most part was fine but at c52mph there seemed to be ex excessive injector knock on light throttle?

(is my memory so bad that it's always that loud but I keep forgetting?

Anyway it got me up and over hard knock pass with only 1 wheel spin and two lots of hand brake flashing Smile

Happy New Year All.

Wayne
