thanks ze.
the prop is out and before I move onto the drum brake itself (tomorrow now)... look what I found (or perhaps what I didn't found).  Click image to enlarge should I be worried (I am) ? I seem to recall something about blank nipples and them not being needed....off to do a search (hopefully K9F will beat me to it as he is king of the search engine

Blimey. If there's no play in the UJ just wind in another nipple and get some grease in there, it will be easier to do while you have the prop off. Steve.

suprisingly there's no play in it.
will try and get a replacement asap. can anyone confirm process for topping up or will I have to drain completely? |

all fixed
was very suprised to find the inside of the drum clean, looking like new. the left hand shoe was poorly located with retaining pin far from straight and there appeared to be excessive wear on the leading edge of the shoe/pad?? straightened up and all seems great. took for drive and boy o boy fantastic - engine is responsive on gear changes.... the only othere thing is while I was underneath I gave her chassis a message - not with any old message oil - no no copper grease no less where there was signs of corrosion. perhaps shes alive and has been playing up thro a lack of tlc from me?? talking of copper grease......
should I have put some grease between the edge of the shoes and the back plate to help them move freely (ie return inwards after the hand brake is released) ? |

Too late now unless you get off on stripping components down unnecessarily. If it's working ok FFS just leave the thing alone and use it

Steve,
all is well thankfully and it is getting used 
but I've got some nice shiney new nuts and bolts for the rear propshaft so I might as well pull my shaft out and put some copper grease on obvously when I get 5 mins. just looking to break some mpg figures now. |

For testing purposes only would there be any harm in removing the drum only and driving around...
Or removing drum and rear prop? |

Just to see / know the pads aren't rubbing on the drum.
It would be a short term test only. |

If they were rubbing to the point you "think" , it would be making any difference to how it drives
the shoes would have been red hot and knackered by now , the drum would have burnt all the paint off and covered in orange rust brakes only have to bind very very slightly and will show signs of getting hot Last edited by munch90 on 25th Dec 2014 10:53pm. Edited 1 time in total |

Great. In that case I'll have a little drive without the rear prop and see if that makes any difference.
I'm sure it's been suggested before and certainly the workshop manual suggests you can get the rear prop off the drum without having to remove it from the rear diff.... . I'll be dammed if I can? Thanks. |

You should be able to just about get the prop off if its jacked up so rear wheels are off the ground ( with the use of supporting axle stands ) , but the axle has to be hanging down at its maximum travel to do so , so the defender cant be jacked up on the axle
i WOULD NOT recommend driving your defender with the rear prop and drum removed i take it there are no signs of the shoes rubbing or got or getting hot |
