Even with Winter Tyres they can still struggle if its deeper than a few inches (from experience) . My 110's BFG MTs (old style) coped fine with some hard packed snow though I had the diff lock in and braking had the ABS going off. Lots of ABS action on some downhil roads with only light snow dusting, though it may have iced up under the snow so suspect if I was on a really icy downhill the 110 may just become a heavy toboggan. 2023 110 P400e |

Yesterday we tried out/compared the following tyres in the snow. 285 wide BFG MT's 285 wide BFG KM2's 235 wide Goodyear MTR's 285 wide Goodyear Duratrac 285 wide Cooper STT's The best tyre with out a doubt was the Duratrac by a long long way (it would be as it has the snowflake symbol) The KM2, STT and MTR were similar The MT was awful |

I have the MT/Rs how far behind are these compared to the duratracs if not that much I'm beginning to think its my driving technique being a newbie with the defender in the snow  It's good to be back from the dark side

i put the centre diff in as soon as i can on snow, mud..at least you got 2wd then! slow speeds the TC should help out aswell. |

Back to original OP question. I have 5 winters experience with the winter wheel/tire combination offered by LR Switzerland as an official LR accessory, and provided you drive carefully in wintry/snowy conditions as you should, they have proven flawless until now. These are Nokians on Modulars.
If you would be facing really serious ice conditions, they also can be studded, matter of fact I have seen two Puma Defenders this week in Kiev (UA) with these Nokians studded
And besides being really good,............. they also look great IMO

I thought the GG TR:s would work in the south of Sweden, but they were totally useless on packed snow/ice. Quickly decided to buy some decent tires, and found a set of used studded Cooper Discoverer MS, four years old with perhaps 10 000 km on them. They're doing their job faultless, but I guess the studs are making quite a difference. They're the same measure as the factory fitted wheels, 235/85 16 fitted to boost rims.

Apologies if this sounds like teaching you to suck eggs but gently does it on the stop and go pedals and gentle steering will help. Get the difflock engaged before you tackle the slippery stuff and out when back on the firm [sometimes need to reverse a bit or run two wheels on a slippery surface to permit the transmission to unwind and allow the centre diff to disengage]. Why were the MTs the worst? was it braking or traction too and what were the conditions, my faded mind thought the MTRs I had on my old discoII seemed to cope better braking and driving than my defenders BFG MTs but as there is a nearly a 8 year gap between the two those memories could be very faded. From looking at some pictures of the treads I think the duratracs seem to have more sipes than the others which could be the reason they were better? 2023 110 P400e |

Conditions conditions!!
I was out today with MTR's not great in compacted snow/ ice but still got from A to B. Last year in fresh snow they were great! If I lived in the North/ Scotland I would certainly want winter tyres/ snowflake AT's but down in the South it's only a few days a year!! Steve Defender 90 TD5 Station Wagon

Mickey Thompson MTZ's in 265/75x16 and ATZ's 305/70x16 work well for me in all conditions including snow, although the ATZ's are marginally better on compacted snow/ice.
